2021-10-02 00:50:20 +0000 UTCAs for why Mustang has the potential to be a sacrifice: it is hinted at that not everyone survives going through the portal. Only those with a strong enough will can survive at all. Early on Lust says that Shou Tucker could not be a sacrifice because he was too weak. (I could be misrembering the wording, but it is something along those lines.) They judged that Mustang was strong enough to come back, and had the motivation to actually open the portal. Tucker, Armstong, and Marco are all missing either the strength or the motivation to pass through the portal and come back. (Or are at least not judged to be worth the risk of working with)
