It’s kind of confusing the way the anime did it, but in the manga, Kyogai was already a demon when his teacher/dad/idk started berating him, he had stopped going out altogether because of the sun, and was basically isolating himself, not eating humans or using his powers at all because he just wanted to write and do the stuff he liked, but then he wasn’t able to contain his rage after his dreams were crushed and basically went “fuck this” and embraced being a demon. Even while being a demon he sought after approval, from Muzan in this case, since being accepted was all he wanted while he was human too. Tanjiro’s words probably saved what little of his heart was left in the end, it’s very tragic how some demons led very sad lives when they were still human 🥺

Hmmm mobile or desktop?

When I put it in full screen it just brings the video to the top of the screen and its the same size but the rest of the screen is black, is that intended or is there something weird on my end?

I think Kyogai was already a demon in the flashback, as the person belittling him says he doesn't go out any more. Being explosively allergic to sunlight as a demon would fit with appearing to be a shut-in. The thing is, he looked human, so maybe he was legitimately trying to not be a monster, and when he was torn down, he decided there was no humanity left in him worth saving. In so much lore, monsters are an allegory for something. Vampires, zombies, werewolves, aliens, etc, usually represent social struggle, class war, environmental anxiety, fears of moral decay, or something. There's a whole visible trend in what movies become popular based on the prevailing existential threat of that era. Here, since demons were once human, each demon is almost it's own story about a human struggle. They're all just really broken people, feeding their addiction and taking their pain out on others. The audience gets to see them as monsters, then you have Tanjiro being the only person to not treat them as monsters. Then half the time, it does that cruel thing and gives the audience the demon's backstory to elicit some sympathy, but Tanjiro doesn't get the benefit of that. He's always the gentle, empathetic, sweet boy; doing his best to save everyone, demons included.

I knew you two would love Zenitsu because of this episode. The show is not going to stop with the feels for the demons backstories i'm afraid. Even one's you honestly start to hate.

Well it doesn't exactly help us if we are not.

I mean, the demons do have a crazed hunger for humans, I don't think they all have the willpower of Nezuko to hold off. I guess a lot of these shows make one ask the question 'Is it really wrong for humans not to be on top of the food chain?'
