Actually the water is "real", by that I mean that the other characters can see it and in some cases feel it (it's addressed by a character in a future ep). But yeah, it's confirmed in the manga that others can see the water.

I know from your editor you guys are quite a few ahead and it hasn't come up yet but a lot of reactors seem to run into it, both the "thread" and water effects Tanjiro has while fighting are just visual representations of how he perceives the fight to make it clearer to the audience what is happening (as well as just being gorgeous to look at). I'm sure you will have caught on, but just in case. :-)
