At the time there was a lot of anger for the way they handled this scene, but in my mind this was handled an awful lot better. In the game it's actually Tommy and Joel who wind up at the lodge, which never sat right with me. It also felt as though they forgot about the zombie hoard that was pursuing them. At least in this version they gave Joel a death that felt befitting to his character. In the game it just felt as though he'd dropped his guard, much too easily, but this time he had a reason and a character motivation. I'm not someone who thinks that characters shouldn't die, I just want their deaths to be handled the right way. Funny thing about the announcement for the game was that the song at the end was in the trailer, and people were speculating that Joel was going to die even then. 2025-04-23 23:18:16 +0000 UTCRevenge is such a natural human response to huge losses at the hands of others - but the cycles of violence it begets doesn't make for happiness for anyone. What I found most interesting was Joel's acceptance of his punishment - it's like he's been waiting for the retribution - if not for what he did to the Fireflies, then for what he did as a raider & smuggler. They showed him flashing back on killing the Doctor as Abby mentioned - I think, at heart, Joel is a good man, driven to terrible things by horrific circumstances - and I think he's aware of what he's done & accepts that he has to pay a price.

2025-04-23 22:03:05 +0000 UTCThat last talk between Joel and Ellie shows up near the end of the game, and man, it hits hard. Super emotional, especially after everything you’ve been through with them. BUT HONESTLY, I WOULDN’T WATCH IT IF YOU DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE LAST OF US PART II — IT JUST WON’T HIT THE SAME. I remember bawling like a baby after watching it. I’m not sure when they’ll show that scene in the series, but I’m guessing it’ll be used to wrap up the season or maybe even the whole show.

To me, the song sounds more ghostly and hauntingly beautiful when you imagine it as being sung by Ellie's deceased parent in a moment where she just lost her other parent.

That feels like completely wrong take to me (and this one of the reasons why so many people show pointless hatred towards the actors playing those roles). They want people to understand why Ellie has so much hatred towards Abby from this point on. Obviously there's people who get too emotionally attached to characters, and it's fine to do.. It's just a shame that people sometimes can't disconnect the actors from the characters. And often people have really hard time understanding things from multiple perspectives.

2025-04-23 16:08:51 +0000 UTCThis Story is just sooo well made. Joel was Abby's antagonist, the pure evil in her eyes. In every other show, she would be our protagonist and we would cheer for her to get her revenge, but not here. The writers want us to hate her deeply, despite her understandable reasons, and it works. The Last of Us Part 2 is one of my favorite stories I have experienced in entertainment ever and the show is doing a great job adapting that (until now at least :D).
