The Last of Us Season 1 Episode 4 REACTION

It's The Last of Us Friday! In episode 3 we saw the story of Bill and Frank which was just beautiful. We saw Joel and Ellie's journey move forward with the acquisition of a vehicle which should make life a bit easier for them. And now they are back on the road.

No spoilers from me in case you haven't seen it yet...but people....it's always the people.....

Hearing you mention gameplay reminded me of a topic that would be cool to explore in a future stream - the way the video game medium encourages empathy with the protagonist when the player is in the “driver seat” so to speak. I love that these stories are reaching a wider audience and hope that analysis of games through a critical and artistic lens continues to expand in the mainstream. I love all the little bonding moments between Joel and Ellie this episode. Great character work by the writers and the actors are killing the delivery. Transference is another great topic to hit on in a stream, I’m not often able to attend them live but enjoy catching up after the fact. Learning a lot! Rewatch has been interesting for me, unlike Arcane I’ve only watched the show once. I’ve “seen” the game many more times and my memory has mixed the two together. I’ll be convinced something went “this way” in the show because I can picture it so clearly with Pedro and Bella but it’s just my imagination mapping them onto the game scenes. All that to say that I’m excited to have forgotten enough to be surprised by the rewatch.

I’m hoping since this is a cliff hanger you’ll want to watch the next episode sooner 😂

To anyone who doesn’t know the soldier guy with Kathleene is the VOICE ACTOR who played TOMMY (Joel’s brother) in the last of us the game 🎮!!!-Go to the last of us chat, i posted a pic there :)

Alone and Foresaken is lifted directly from the game, but a lot of the musical choices are meant to be evocative either lyrically or melodically. Or both. Craig Mazin loved the original and brought on the creators to work on the show, so it’s as much an homage as it is a retelling in a new format. Lots of little details or callbacks everywhere.

This episode is very sweet, ( regarding all the killing) You can see Joel fight not to get attached to Ellie and pushing her away but context keeps throwing her to him . We really need to do Joel and Ellie formulations 🥰

Something of note with the glass at the end, Ellie says she's noticed he doesn't hear too well from his right ear, at some point while they were sleeping, he turned towards Ellie, leaving his right ear up, hence he didn't hear them come up. This episode serves as a bit of setup so it's a bit slower, probably my least favourite episodes but it still is chalk full of great little Joel and Ellie moments. Love seeing your insights onto the characters and how they relate to each other. How Joel is trying to keep Ellie at a distance but whether he can admit it or not, he's becoming attached to her... and it really shows in his actions. He says he's going to sleep, but when Ellie expresses fear, he decides to keep watch all night. The subtlety of it makes it that much more impactful. Also fun fact! The guy who plays Kathleen's second in command, was the voice of Tommy in the game. A bunch of the prominent voice actors in the game play some role in the show, but the only one who plays the same role in both is Marlene.
