Lets do Powder's Psychological Formulation (I went a bit overboard here!)
Added 2024-12-13 18:55:10 +0000 UTCI thought I would formulate what we know about Powder just from the first episode in the way I actually formulate in my practice. Let me know what you think!

Another thing to consider is that we're looking at a traumatic event that changes Powder. We don't yet know what she'll go with her reaction to that fight scene. Clearly she's taken a real hit to her ego. The way she shows Vi her new weapons looks like she's looking for ways to resolve that loss. Let's hope we get more information in ep3.

2024-12-17 20:22:24 +0000 UTCSounds perfectly normal to me (but I'm a horrible reference point). Good luck with the writing, and a bit of unsolicited advice: "The best thesis defense is a good thesis offense" (https://xkcd.com/1403/)

2024-12-15 21:31:46 +0000 UTCThank you. To answer your question a thesis ebs and flows when it comes to workload. I’m currently (hopefully) getting near the end and it’s actually quite a busy time for it. But I actually like doing the YouTube channels as my thing to do to get a break from the thesis. It’s also somewhat helpful it’s all related as my thesis is in how services can better understand trauma presentations so I apply what I’ve read in the up to date literature and my actual clinical practice to what I see and hear in music and videos. It keeps me motivated with the subject but at the same time I get to experience some cool music and tv shows. Probably sounds really geeky!

2024-12-15 20:20:47 +0000 UTCReally enjoyed the analysis. well structured and great explanations. on another note: how on earth do you have time for this while working on your thesis?

2024-12-15 20:09:40 +0000 UTCThis will be interesting to see develop, as there are gazillions of amateur psychologists in the fandom analyzing Powder throughout season 1 in particular.

2024-12-15 20:04:04 +0000 UTCYeah we can do that when we get to the point they are introduced to me in the show!

2024-12-14 16:05:22 +0000 UTCWhat a lovely and insightful video. There’s 3 more characters in particular I’d love to see this kind of breakdown for, but I’m reluctant to name drop them yet in case of causing spoilers through inference

2024-12-14 15:46:12 +0000 UTCMight do a quick one for Vander later as from episode 1 we know very little about him (which makes for a quick formulation) but then can add onto that as each episode / arc progresses.
StuBoy
2024-12-14 13:17:36 +0000 UTCPowder is definitely the best subject for this formulation, and I feel like there's enough to unpack just for her after each arc. That said, I would love this type of content for many, many more characters. You said that doing this after each episode is probably not feasible, but a man can hope. :D

2024-12-14 13:14:00 +0000 UTCConsidering doing Vander as its always interesting to do a formulation when you know very little about someone and how to tackle that, especially after just episode 1, and it will only take about 15 mins as theres so little information - but that can build as the episodes go on. I'm hoping to watch episodes 2 and 3 this weekend to finish off the arc. Ive also got to get about 5000 words of my doctoral thesis written so got to balance that (and that should probably take priority). I'm in the final chapter of my thesis (100,000 words which ive been working on for 4 years) so once that is submitted next year I intend to absolutely hammer my youtube channel as I will have so much more free time!

2024-12-14 09:33:50 +0000 UTCThis show is legitimately my safe space. I'd watch this all the way through even if it was 10 hours long. Brilliant work

2024-12-13 23:24:06 +0000 UTCYeah that’s exactly how I see it.

2024-12-13 20:02:39 +0000 UTCbtw, this is exactly the type of conversation that I imagine would be awesome to have on stream
James Anderson
2024-12-13 19:52:46 +0000 UTCah that's well explained, and I see what you mean! that makes a lot of sense: so because the fight spontaneously errupted in her presence, running away is normal, but if she were actively avoiding a planned fight so as not to be reminded of the bridge, that could be evidence of avoidance
James Anderson
2024-12-13 19:49:46 +0000 UTCIn a purely ‘trauma’ sense the avoidance would be avoidance of inner and external reminders of the trauma. If her friends say lets go and do something and she said no with the reason being she didn’t want to get in a fight that would then reminder her if seeing fights when her mum died then that would probably be considered avoidance (in the sense of the 3 components of ptsd). I would say her running at that point was a normal non trauma driven behaviour of self preservation. Not sure if that is what you were asking?

2024-12-13 19:34:22 +0000 UTCFinished now, Long form content is what i was hoping for, so this is great. As far as other characters this would be worth doing on, two others come to mind but I think you should be guided by what you find interesting!

2024-12-13 19:32:32 +0000 UTCNot done watching yet, but I have a question purely based on curiosity: is the fact that Powder ran from the fight evidence of avoidance -- given my assumption that she's growing up in an environment where (based on episode 1) fighting seems to be the norm (milo says "this day is turning out alright afteral" post fight which makes me imagine it's normalized, and even Vander is keen to confirm that Vi put the boy "on his ass"? I'm guessing the answer's "no", but just curious as to reasons why the answer would be "no"

2024-12-13 19:28:18 +0000 UTCOh you never have to apologize for doing long videos on this show, the longest one I’ve come across was 5 hours 😂 psychologists just love it lmao
Chelly
2024-12-13 19:25:15 +0000 UTCYeah sorry it’s quite long. In my head I thought it would be about 20 mins! Saying that when I facilitate this with actual teams working with adolescents we usually aim for 90 mins to 2 hours but that’s for 4-8 of us to add what we know.

2024-12-13 19:20:12 +0000 UTCHalfway through really enjoying this.

2024-12-13 19:17:42 +0000 UTCYeah I was thinking earlier I could stream it and then get some viewer chat involved.
StuBoy
2024-12-13 19:11:28 +0000 UTCI'm really enjoying this so far! btw, have you considered streaming these types of sessions? I recall a creator doing something similar -- a long-form analysis while taking into account input from his live stream's chat -- then uploading the video: https://youtu.be/qE1kA89Osqc?si=cw0qIpSuXbmbrivV
