Finishing this a bit late. My issue woth the trial stuff and why I see Amaya's take on it as fair is because of the punishment idea. The fact that the queen is getting involved with the punishment means the government is punishing someone for a religious offense. That goes beyond knowing that that's soemthing you're girlfriend's culture or religion does. Yes it's important but when you're talking about criminal charges against someone who doesn't share the same religion it's crossing a line. Ultimately the punishment determined does seem suitable especially as you're not going change the way the sunfire elves government works overnight but even if i knew someone's beliefs if someone else were being arrested for breaking them I'll go wtf and might not be the most polite in pointing out how absurd that is. Nit the best response from a political point of view and there are better ways to bring up the confern but Amaya isn't known for tact. Also Jinai's sister was totally expecting Amaya to die by looking into the sun thing. The history and culture of the sunfire elves is one of strict adherence to its culture and beliefs and to not accept outsiders in to change it. That's what Kiram meant. He doesn't want progress or for the culture to change. And that culture includes execution for disrupting a soul candle

Oh don't worry Karim gets way more... interesting throughout the seasons (and by interesting I mean frustrating beyond belief).

I also really liked the thing with Amaya. It would be unrealistic if she was perfect enough to see reason in every situation and be immediately respectful towards everything. Especially given the fact that Amaya actively fought and HATED elves. It makes sense that she would be ignorant, even cruel, towards their culture. It gives her character the kind of growth she needs, because the way this resolved shows her commitment to Janai far better than if she was unquestionably loyal right away. Also, I agree, the dude should not have gone unpunished. I honestly think that's a bit of an issue with the show. It loves to paint elves and dragons as these good folks with maybe a few bad apples yet somehow the humans all seemingly have devastating flaws.

Bug Catcher Jacky

Anyone else catch the slight How to train your Dragon "Test Drive" score tune during Ezran and Zym's synced flight? It's very subtle but I definitely felt it was there!

Bug Catcher Jacky

Ya know for the longest time I called him “great value drake” but after recent times that’s probably best not to lmao

The Akimbo Knight

Amaya's always been rather blunt and careless with her words, even in previous seasons. You could chock it up to her military-speak, or to the anti-elf environment she was raised in - but the result is the same. She has a habit of coming across as harsh. I think it's honestly a very good and realistic character flaw for her to have! Compare that to Karim who's all flowery words and impassioned speeches, but ultimately is far more hateful and malicious than Amaya ever is

Rye-Ah

Yes, Karim sucks. Looking forward to your next reaction!

Fun fact, at my sister's wedding the mother of the bride processed in to an instrumental version of "The Rains of Castemere" because it was a literary themed wedding we nicknamed "The Read Wedding".

Ryan Porter

I like to refer to Karim as "discount Viren"

Verdant Crown

I only want to say one thing Karim sucks

tealmemer

GoT for Kids... Me seeing one of the later episodes literally named "The Red Wedding"... 😯 (Lets just say I was DREADING that episode like no other)

LikeCat

You want Claudia to suffer? Good. When you consider the target audience is 7+, these episode is such a great lesson without being preachy. Show, not tell. And then it ends with the reminder that this is "Game of Thrones for Kids".

Respectfully, context is everything, and the context of funeral services is a VERY sensitive one. And I'm not sure it's okay to bring the "savage v. civilized" angle into this argument. Rational people still have instinctive responses of outrage when their traditions and tragedies are disregarded and disrespected as callously as they are here. There's no need to otherize them like that.

{L} Frances

I don’t want to get into a whole argument again but there’s a good reason that people everywhere have decided a long time ago that “I was angry” is not a valid defense in court. Making it seem as if the elf almost couldn’t react any other way (Elijah goes even a step further with her “poking the bear” analogy) does a grave disservice to the elves in this world who are portrait as having the same rational capabilities as humans. It’s a borderline colonialist attitude that puts the burden of having to work with the unrestrained savage on the civilized human.

Bernhard

I think Amaya and the other human attitude lack empathy but they're not the worse. It was a candle. Yes it had more cultural significance than being a candle but the humans have none of the knowledge about that and the only time we see the elves try to explain it was during a tense situation. The initial indifference was still out of line but it's also problematic to expect new people to understand the cultural history of a society. Especially when the 2 societies were purposefully isolated and had little contact. Again, the indifference to situation is wrong but it shows how poor this situation was done to have elves and humans work and live together. And some elves (the brother) do not want to make it easier. The birthday comment is a bit insensitive but also Kirim just expected her to understand the cultural significance and relate without explaining why and as a way to justify punishment. You're going get resistance.

Suplee215

I'm surprised you didn't react to the credits as usual.

Iron117Prime

I agree I don't think he should be punished especially since they believe that if its put out prematurely the soul is destroyed, in his eyes she murdered his mother a second time.

Salteroo

I think the way Amaya was behaving was actually very in line with her character, keep in mind she has been at war with the elves for far longer than she hasnt been so just because shes fallen in love with one elf doesn't mean she'll suddenly be open minded to all elves especially when a human she or ezran brought here was harmed you know?

Salteroo

Yeah, Karim is very much stuck in the past and wants to Make Lux Aurea Great Again He lost his home, his sister, and the source of much of the sunfire elves' magic all in one day, and probably to some degree because of the trauma of that now wants things to go back to exactly what their people were before Viren and Sparkles happened to them last season. Any sort of change from that, like them being so desperate that they needed to integrate with humans to help them recover or not doing the traditional punishment for a criminal etc, is seen as the slow death of the culture they once had and a terrible crime in his eyes There is no room for compromise or change or even thinking about the future really in his worldview. Just a stubborn clinging to history and tradition at any cost

Andy

It's at this point that Karim basically becomes the new Viren.

Flufux

[MOD] Hey everyone! Remember to keep the comments free of any spoilers of future episodes for Elijah. Also, make sure we’re keeping the comments cool & comfortable for everyone here. Enjoy the reaction y’all!!!

Sam

I can't say much because spoilers, but Kasim to me is basically what Viren was to you. And he starts off fairly understandable, too. Also I still can't hate Claudia lol. Even at her worst she has likable traits to me. Also I love when you talk about your point of view and engage with the people that disagree. It's pretty nice to see someone talk about the complexity of writing in stuff. Also it's nice to see you at Moscoe's again! Hope you've been having a great time!

Bailey

I will say, this is a tough conversation to have cause it's about cultural practices, particularly around mourning the death of a loved one. I disagree that the guy should be punished for burning her. Like, if somebody came into my mom's funeral, threw her out of her casket onto the dirt, I would be very deeply annoyed. Probably annoyed enough to hit the jerk who did, which I think would be a valid response. And when you're an elf whose physical expression of outrage is fire, that's about the equivalent. And I'm glad with how they wrote Amaya here, cause it is consistent with her past bigotry. That doesn't all go away as if it never happened. There are still traces, and she is still trying to work through them, and I like that. But yeah, Karim sucks; enjoy your new Viren!

{L} Frances

Introducing Kasim! Don't worry, we all hate him too
