I will put this to ease some worries, though they really should have put it in the episode, the potion wears off after 3 hours and if they're still together, it's love. It should have been in the episode and not just in side material (pretty sure that was just damage control anyway). Still, not good writing for the original episode.

The Hamilton reference was fun, though, so there’s that at least (as a theatre kid, I’m biased)

The irony is now I def relate more to Dipper, even tho I was maybe a bit “boy crazy” growing up, so did relate somewhat to Mabel. Maybe I just have too much empathy, but I can sometimes find it hard to hate characters I relate to bc it feels like I’d be hating on myself.
Then again, I’m more mature now so I see the problems with Mabel’s portrayal. I was more naive when I first watched Gravity Falls and connected with Mabel.
Tbf, tho, despite relating somewhat to Mabel’s “boy craziness,” I mostly had crushes on fictional characters and celebrities, and now, I’m questioning being lesbian so there’s that too lol.
Finally, while I don’t think they’re meaning to be selfish, I can sometimes relate to feeling like my younger sibling gets everything that I don’t—the friends, the relationships, the experiences—which has sometimes been a point of contention in my own life.

Sorry you were disappointed with this one. The next episode is one of the top episodes and it's pretty much all good to the end.

I think the best moral of the episode I can think of is that if people are happy, don't mess with it. Also, sometimes you just need to have faith that things will work out. Which it did. The group got back together. Robbie's cool now and has friends again. Having kinda been there, I don't wish the experience of having no friends on anyone. Also, if Mabel deserves credit for anything. Deep down, she has a good heart. "How can I be happy when someone else is sad?" Her heart hurts for others. I understand and agree that she shouldn't have done what she wanted against others' wishes, but she did it because she thought it would end up being better for everyone. And in the end, it was

I completely agree with you about Mabel, yeah other characters are selfish too Dipper included but they all seem to learn from their mistakes and try not to do it again including Stan who at the start was the most selfish seeming character but Mabel never seems to learn. She does things she wants despite others protests like you pointed out and then goes "Oh no" when it all blows up in her face. But then when all is said and done she doesn't change. And I get that she's 12 but 12 year olds are more than capable enough to learn from mistakes.
I've seen so many people try and excuse Mabel's actions and decisions and I don't hate her but if there was one gripe I have with the show it's Mabel's character, the fact she gets called out by the main antagonist in the show earlier in the season as well and still seems to disregard her brothers and other wishes is frustrating. Sorry for the rant, I'm really loving all your reactions by the way :)

Honestly, I can understand your hatred of this episode. before this episode, I thought you would hate it because of the whole love potion business looks like I was right though I did not expect you to hate it so quickly for Robby but in retrospect, it makes a lot of sense
Also, expect to get answers soon in a few episodes. Vwdq lv qrw zkdw kh vhhpv.

"Mosco got to you!"
Someone had to say it! 😁
She is NOT a Mabel fan.
Mabel's behavior is a frequent point of contention within the fandom. Yes, she's delightful and silly, but she's the cause of a fair amount of grief in the series. Far from the biggest source, but more than she ought. So you're definitely not alone in taking issue with her.

Honestly, rewatching this series with you has been kinda wild. I completely forgot this episode existed and was this bad. Yeah, Mabel is VERY consistent with her selfishness. Genuinely can't see why they had to make her such a genuinely dislikeable character without properly addressing it. I actually would have loved her being a selfish character if she had character growth to go with it. She should have been able to work on it throughout the series.

Every time I kept hearing 'Robbie', I immediately thought 'What have I done?' lol
But then I realized that he is a man that definitely needs therapy.
Also, you're absolutely right about Mabel. Don't let those people (Mabel fans) get to you. You're awesome!

I've had years to get over it, but I get your frustration with the whole dubious consent with the love potion thing lmao. One of the weakest eps imo, and one that I am glad you are done with. If the next ep is the one I think it is though, it's one of my faves and one I am very much looking forward to your reaction to!

This is one of the show's weakest episodes. The "I EAT KIDS" balloon is incredible hilarious peak comedy, but the A plot is painful to watch. Having finished the show, I really do like Mabel, but I can't blame you at all for being sick of her because I felt the same way at this point. Early season 2 Mabel cranks up her season 1 character flaws while mostly ignoring the actual likable parts of her character. They brought her around by the end, but right now she's at her worst.

I am not a fan of this episode either, and as for the Mabel stans they are crazy and you are far from the first reactor they've hated on for pointing out obvious character flaws just ignore them they are the vocal minority as far as I can tell. Also Waddels and Gompers are both males so technically a gay couple for whats its worth.

It does highlight a flaw in Mable’s character that Elijah does point out, that she does what she wants and everyone faces the bad consequences, especially Dipper her brother who only makes the odd bad mistake here and there. Plus, it doesn’t matter whether things ended well in the end, forcing love is wrong. So yeah, it is challenging.

This episode is definitely on the lower end for most of us. But good news, from here on out I think you'll love the rest of the show. And despite her flaws I do still like Mabel as a character, but there's definitely a lot of moments in the show where they could have handled her better.

I personally like that episode. It’s not my favorite, but it’s not the worst either in my opinion. Alex also said that he included it to give the viewers one breather episode before the finale. And I think it’s important to watch in that regard.

I’ve never been remotely energetic, and I was not boy crazy at her age. I still like her. So this “two types of people” thing doesn’t really ring true to me. I understand people that think she’s a bit much, but I also don’t really love the framing of them as “the rest of us”. Some people can like her without being anything like her at any age, because liking a character isn’t always about finding them “relatable”.
No offense intended by my response, I just don’t agree with some aspects of your comment.

2023-12-05 18:45:59 +0000 UTC
I like this episode, I find the humor really funny overall. But then, there’s not really any episodes of this show I dislike. Because while it is a show about mystery, these standalone episodes help to explore the cast and give world building. I don’t really agree that these episodes are “filler”, because that term has a very specific meaning that doesn’t fit here. Same with similar episodes in TOH and Amphibia. And there was just an episode about the mystery two episodes ago with The Society of the Blind Eye, so it’s not like they’ve left anyone waiting for that long on that front. So I am sad that you don’t like the episodes that don’t focus on the overarching mystery as much, because most of them are at least enjoyable, if not good episodes on their own. That’s just my view on this, though.
However, despite me enjoying this episode, I completely understand why it’s a very controversial one. And I had a feeling that you weren’t going to like it in the second half especially. The love potion aspect taking consent and agency away from Robbie and Tambry has been something the fanbase has been uncomfortable with and debating since the episode came out. And I’m not a fan of it either.
Also, I really love Mable, so it is sad to see you go from liking her at the start of the show to disliking her character. You’re not the only one that feels that way about her though. There’s a sizable portion of the fanbase that hates her for all the reasons you and Mosco do. I don’t feel the hate, personally. She absolutely has flaws, but I like her despite them. She’s not my favorite character though, that’s always going to be Dipper. I don’t begrudge you for not feeling the same way about Mable, either way. Just because it can be sad to see someone grow to dislike a character you like in real time, doesn’t mean it’s a problem. Everyone has different opinions, and that’s a good thing. And your reasoning for not liking her is valid, and it would also be valid to not have a reason at all to not like a character.
Sorry you’re getting so many hate comments about her! That’s dumb that anyone is harassing you for your opinion about a fictional character not being what they want it to be!
Hopefully you’ll enjoy the next episode more, it’s a really good one!

I don't foresee much pushback on your reaction to this episode. It's not one of the more liked episodes. And of all the Mabel Doing Whatever She Wants episodes, this is also one you're probably going to get less pushback on. Like, I think there's too much of that pattern with Mabel in the show, but mostly the individual episodes themselves work. Just, again, too many of them. This one just doesn't work, though.

Honestly I enjoy Gideon way more than Robbie. Yeah, Gideon’s annoying and a creep but he’s a villain and you’re supposed to hate him. Robbie is just an annoying bully who feels threatened by a 12 year old and resorted to brainwashing Wendy after she considered dumping him for ditching her. Plus Robbie is also voiced by TJ Miller, so there’s that…

M-hm. Trying to retroactively explain away the unfortunate implications of dubious consent doesn't make the episode more palatable. Or fun. Nor does it make Mabel less annoying. The Big Reveal is gonna be such a sweet palate cleanser... EDIT: Oh yeah, and the thing with the friends bullying the chubby member of the group being treated as a joke: GTFO. Hate that crap. ☹

Mabel is a divisive character. I have found there are two types of people.
1. Highly energetic people who were also a bit boy crazy at that age. Who find her endearing.
2. The rest of us who find her a bit much.

Hey Elijah I actually agree with you that Mabel Pines can be quite annoying so I get your frustration with her but as for the mystery aspect of the show trust me it’s so worth it to get through these filler episodes cause it’s so good and it’s coming up soon so you just have to be patient cause I promise you it’s all worth it in the end the pay off for who you find out the author of the journal is one of the best things about Gravity Falls 😊 So can’t wait for your next reaction I’m loving these Have a Great Day and can’t wait for your KIPO reactions too Take Care Elijah 😊

It was supposed to be a homosexual couple stumbling out of the van, but of course Disney refused to let it happen. Of course, an implied baby snadger is perfectly fine.
