HS - 2x03 - Reaction (Full)

I'm also a full year late to watching your reaction to this lol, but I kind of feel Elle in this. My partner and I were really good friends before we started dating. Both of our biggest fears going into the relationship was that it would change our dynamic too much, it wouldn't work, and then we wouldn't even have the friendship anymore. I think it would have freaked me out if the person who I had developed a strong friendship with and developed feelings for started drastically changing their appearance or what kind of activities we did together just to cater to what they think I want out of a partner. I think you were spot on earlier (I don't remember if it was this episode or the last one) when you said he should just plan a date doing what they'd normally do. Just... add in the intention of "this is a date" and maybe some hand holding, cuddling, whatever the vibe is. I do appreciate Tao's gesture, and I think it would've worked better without fully cutting his hair (maybe dressing up a bit and styling it instead) or picking a movie that he still at least doesn't hate.

I would never go to a movie with Tao. Every single time he talks about them, he 100% comes off as the kind of guy who obsessively watches Cinemasins and takes it as the only proper way to judge them.

I wanna share my perspective on Elle in this episode or basically how I interpret why she's feeling or acting the way she is: In the previous episodes, Elle was trying to make advances with Tao but he wasn't reciprocating. From that she assumes that he didn't like her back and even tells Darcy and Tara this. From our point of view we know he likes her back but from her perspective he doesn't. So when he does come and ask her out she's really confused because he was giving her signals that they should just be friends. I've had someone do this to me before and I was also confused, the situation didn't end great either so I can see where Elle is coming from. I think the show could've better indicated that as an issue because it was more subtle here and the way Elle is feeling isn't as clear. With the movie theater thing Elle just generally doesn't enjoy when someone makes changes for her. She doesn't want Tao to sacrifice who he is and the things he enjoys doing (i.e. the haircut and picking Elle favourite movie) just because he thinks she'll like it. Again I think this could've been executed better because from how we see it he's just nervous and isn't intentionally doing this to just do whatever Elle wants. Overall, from this point in the story (don't wanna spoil the rest so this is how I was feeling after the episode when I initially watched it) they both need to work on things and communicate better. Tao needs to be more open about how he feels, and not make changes to himself because he thinks that's what Elle wants. And like you said, Elle needs to be more understanding of Tao and how he's just nervous to take this next step in their relationship. I totally get why you felt confused about Elle so I just thought I'd share how I interpreted things.
