I LOVED this movie so much, if really hit hard. I think I cried 4 separate times. And your reaction was great, your story of pride in relation to that scene. Excellent point.

If you liked his voice work here, definitely check out Sound Of Metal or Nightcrawler. Word of warning, though, Nightcrawler is a REALLY disquieting movie about really sleazy people.

2023-08-02 04:11:56 +0000 UTCI finally watched Nimona today and had to come watch your reaction. I'm really grateful for how much you recognize and commented on the trans allegory. As a trans woman, this film hits differently, and it had me in tears almost the whole time. I think my favorite moment is when Nimona describes what transforming feels like: "Honestly? I feel worse when I don't do it. Like my insides are itchy. You know like that second right before you sneeze? That's close to it. And I shapeshift and I'm free...I wouldn't DIE die...I just sure wouldn't be living!" What a beautiful and poetic description of gender dysphoria and the freedom of being ourselves. Insides being itchy resonates so true to when I was closeted and before I could transition. I hope this film gives gender-expansive people early in their exploration language to describe their experience. And I hope it gives cis people deeper empathy for trans folks.

Nimona is very quickly becoming one of my favourite characters from anything. They have such a fun chaotic energy, the way they can turn into anything they want when they want, and even their dislike for pineapple on pizza. Literally me if I was able to shapeshift. And of course, the representation angle. Whether you're trans, nonbinary, genderfluid, a mix of them or anything else, there's a very relatable element to the character. I love this so much 😭 Edit: Omg this movie... it ended up hitting waaaay heavier than I expected at the time... Not only is this story just beautiful and heavy as it is, but the fact that it has a lot of parallels to shit that happens in the real world makes it hit even harder... my poor heart...

I'm a valid person. I am a woman...at least in my heart. And i see a film like this...and I connect with it so deeply...on such a deep and emotional level. I'm trying not to cry...or maybe I should, I don't know. I actually haven't seen your reaction yet, but I'm very looking forward to watching it later. I really just came to say that I have seen it myself and I loved it so much. I thought it was so beautiful, and I can only hope in my heart that as many people see it as possible. People need to see this film. No matter who they are, they need to see this.

It has empowered me in a way no other film has and I have to thank Nate and the rest of the writers, directors and producers for that. I feel that everyone and I mean EVERYONE needs to watch this film, it needs to be become a household film in the same way every other Disney and Pixar film is. People need to hear what this film is saying.

Also, I am Team Pineapple but with sausage. I have, unfortunately, developed an allergy to pineapple over the past few years. It makes my tongue fuzzy and numb. I don't know what I miss more: the pizza or the pina coladas. :(

All pronouns apply whether it be they/them, she/her, he/him or anything else in between. It depends on the form expressed in the moment by Nimona. Nimona is simply Nimona and the form Nimona takes is who/what Nimona is presently. No more, no less.

That roar that turns into a scream and then the shock and we see the metal hand against the exposed heart... I was in awe. For anyone who hasn't read the graphic novel, it is totally worth reading if you love this movie! They are distinct enough works of art in terms of both art and actual storyline to offer a lot independently.

2023-07-04 05:33:34 +0000 UTCWanted to give a little history (just in case you didn't know about the movie's production), this film was originally produced by Blue Sky Studios and was set for an October 2021 release. Unfortunately, Blue Sky's owner, 20th Century Fox, was purchased by Disney. As a result, the film's production kept getting pushback despite going completely fine without them; and heads were getting critical of the film's LGBT themes, especially the kiss at the end of the film; since they weren't Background Characters that could easily be edited out for international releases. Blue Sky's film before this, Spies in Disguise, had underperformed during the merger, so Disney used that as an extra reason to, not just can Nimona (despite being 75% finished), but completely destroy Blue Sky along with it. Annapurna, a year later, picked the film back up and used it as the first film of their new animation division. So, the film performing as well as it is now is awesome and hopefully will make Disney see what they could have had.

Nimona's theme (the choral part) gets me right in the feels. Nimona was originally being worked on by Blue Sky studios, before they were bought out by Disney and soon after shut down. I wonder how different that version would have been. Cutting off arms is not a love language! Be charming, not disarming.

A term that refers to the Greek hero Achilles, modeled after the use of the term “sapphic” for women who are attracted to women. Similar to MLM.

They're not shown as a human girl before meeting Gloreth. Their "original" form is never explained, because it's not important. It's not relevant to the story and it's not part of Nimona's identity.

I believe the mlm word you're looking for is "Achillean", after the mythological Greek hero Achilles. I've heard "Uranian", "Vincian", and "Wildean" as well, but Achillean most commonly. Apparently it's earliest usage dates back to 1959. That said, Ambrosius & Ballister were wonderful! That soft moment at the start with Ballister putting his head on Ambrosius's shoulder. I was hooked. Fantastic pairing! I'm pro pineapple on pizza. I prefer ham, but pepperoni works. And like you, jalapeños to give it a little pop! I've been pushing this movie on everyone I know. It's amazing!

2023-07-04 03:42:39 +0000 UTCPineapple on pizza *can* work. The problem is that it's such a moist food that unless you're careful, it can easily make the crust soggy...and that's never good. Nimona is literally *everything* fluid. But I think they present as female when human (and I say "when human" because that was definitely a *male* gorilla) most of the time because that was the gender of the first human they met.
