Book 2 Poll
Added 2022-12-08 04:27:27 +0000 UTCBook 2 is over! That means it's time to get some feedback. Part of this is so I can go back and do some edits; part of this is so I know what people like when moving into book 3.
The poll allows you to choose multiple options, so pick whatever below that you agree with. If there's something else you have to say about the book -- a comment, a question, a gripe -- throw it in the comments below! I welcome feedback of all varieties.

2022-12-14 16:13:21 +0000 UTCRather than going through the survey.... I feel it'd be better to explain myself here. I feel like... rather than being a complete story arc (conflict build up, climax, resolution), book 2 is a collection of disjointed, disparate story arcs that really don't mesh well. The settlement stuff is separate from the academy stuff, which is separate from the relationship stuff with half the people Tess knows, which is separate from the archmage stuff, which is separate from the class trial stuff. Indeed, we only saw a few of those resolve in the book either - only her class trial and a bit of her conflict with Warram. The class trial ended with a cliff too. The Hartha/Cal/Rock/Nadja/King arc is basically being dragged out from book 1 into book 3 now; they're basically in a holding pattern for the entire arc. The archmage never decided if he was going to keep her on full time. No word if the builder traded for church blueprint. Speaking of quests... any development towards literacy or the poison immunity quests? Not even a word. None of her friends are really related to her crafting either except alchemy. I can't say there's anything wrong with any of the threads individually other than it felt like everything was being spread out too much; no real direction, scattered everywhere. This made everything feel like it was dragging on, and left feeling like book 2 was nothing more than just set up for book 3.

Tess' class is supposed to be a combat class, but I think the only reason she even put points into those trees is because you didn't allowed her to advance in the utility tree. And I expect the weapon and armor skills' class trial to be a lot more straightforward and easier simply because bind armor and bind weapon are a lot simpler skills.

2022-12-08 09:31:38 +0000 UTCThis is very much so true. I originally planned for this book to end quite differently, and a good bit more climatically. As the wordcount started to climb, though, I realized that there just was absolutely no way to do so without essentially doubling the size of this book. It's already pretty bulky at 200k words, and longer than the first by a little bit, so I ended up splitting it. Realistically, though, this is kind of a part 1 of 2 book. As you said, book 3 will be resolving a lot of the open plotlines/character arcs set up here.

2022-12-08 09:29:23 +0000 UTCI generally liked book 2 (As you may have concluded by the fact that I'm still here), but it feels like most of it went into setting things up. (Tess fiding her place in Sylum, getting to know ppl, Introducing all the new characters), which isn't inherently bad, but now there is an expectation about book 3 and the things you set up. Also: I miss Cal from the story.
