We watched all the Universal Frankenstein movies this month (my first time) and wove in the Wolf-man films (my second time, William’s first) since the second fits into the Frankenstein timeline. The continuity of this shared universe is actually pretty impressive.
Anyway, the Wolf-man movies aren’t that great, mostly for 2 reasons: 1) they aren’t based off of anything, no traditional tale, no classic of literature. Just basic plot fare. And 2) Lon Cheney Jr. isn’t a great lead, he’s just not in the league of Karloff or Legosi.
I do enjoy the set up of the second film (Frankenstein meets the Wolf-man) more than the first… Talbot (Cheney) just wants to die, but can’t because the Wolf-man is immortal (nevermind that the previous werewolf who bit him died very easily). It fits his character, who is a drip and a sop and is constantly sweatily pleading with anyone who will give him the time of day “wontcha please help me!”.
I think I may draw Karloff soon, he was pretty sexy out of makeup. Maybe in as well, that’s for you to decide.
