Hey I was digging through back up files and came across this, my first illustration job for a major queer magazine. This was to illuminate the “what’s hot” summer list that year, and the art director had liked my comicbook work that I was doing in adobe illustrator at that time, specifically the Grey Otter, and the texture of the original piece of Feral digging up/fucking the Ghost Skater’s corpse… which is why the guy driving the buggy resemble the Grey Otter and the two main figures have the texture they do.
So
The art director wanted the whole thing to be set in hell. It was, lol. The figures were all devils, and that was Satan himself driving the dune buggy. A devil in the background surfing a sea of fire. I was well into this and nearly done when the editor caught a glimpse and freaked out… so I had to remove all satanic imagery and convince them that a buggy of bones wasn’t in itself demonic.
Sigh.
I still like the piece, it was fun to do and OUT paid better than the porn mags I would later do art for paid, but thematically it is a mess. This was the same year Instigator freaked out on me for centaurs and satyrs being possibly seen as beastiality. It was in the air, I suppose.
