So second in my series of “drawing whatever the fuck I want as tattoo flash” is Valkyrie, from the ‘70s Defenders book, emulating Sal Buscema, one of my favorites of the era. Valkyrie was a character I didn’t care much for until I started my read through of a handful of Marvel books from the same start, and I got to experience her from her origins. I kinda love her now, obviously. She was created by the Enchantress as a foil for male heroes, her shtick being a woman’s liberation warrior… but by her third appearance she was freed from the Enchantress’s influence and joined the new group, the Defenders (Dr. Strange, the Hulk, and at the time, the Sub-Mariner). She’s the second owner of the Black Knight’s flying horse, Aragorn (everyone was reading Lord of the Rings back then). She’s the original “female Thor”. I love Tessa Thompson’s Val, but I also now love this over-the-top operatic character.
