David Warner, RIP.

So I cheated and drew the photographer from the Omen! Lol. I always wanted to draw Evil and still plan to (Evil from Time Bandits won the poll). But as soon as I posed the question of which character to draw as tribute, I knew I wanted to draw this here.

I used to read books a lot, and picked this habit up from my mother… and the Omen I literally picked up from my mother. When the film was coming out, the novel written by the screenwriter was released two weeks before the movie. My mother bought and read it, and I read it when she was done, both before seeing the film. The major differences I remember both involved the Photographer: one was the manner in which he died… he was impaled much like the priest, and the second was that he visited with some prostitutes while in Italy. The first I understand totally the change in the film. He has an iconic death… maybe this was a choice to have it be a surprise in the film. The novel was more of a novelization, but written by the screenplay author… an odd bird of a book. The second always stuck with me even though it’s not in the film. I was 12 when I read this, and it was probably my biggest exposure to sex work at the time, even with the jokes from adults about the local whore house. There was one odd detail I still recall: Jennings (Photographer) washed his genitals in his own urine after having sex with the prostitute, because this was supposed to negate any sexually transmitted diseases. This is the only place I have ever heard of such a thing.

Anyway, we did a watch of all the Omen films recently, I had only seen the original before. It’s still a classic, though not quite on a par with other great horror films of the era.

And the crow from the second film has the best Goldsmith theme and deserves his own franchise.

David Warner, RIP.
