Okay here’s page 1! This will be 4 maybe 5 pages. The editors had the idea to do a limited palette, black, white, and yellow. I’ve opted to add a grey tone as well.
This page, the intro, I struggled with a bit. There’s information I left out that was factual, but unnecessary for the story and possibly confusing… like the guy Jeff we are speaking of is a guy we knew as a bartender and drug dealer. I consulted with one of the editors (William, the hot one I live with) and it was decided to cut those references.
I always feel some trepidation telling autobiographical stories, and admitting that we were coming from buying some drugs was making me feel weirdly vulnerable. I’ve been 22 years sober and drug free now, and writing about drug use before I quit can seem… unseemly, lol. Plus, we are all smoking cigarettes in this story. The 90s were a different time. A lot has changed since then.
Also only appearing here is an old friend I used to get into a lot of trouble with. Lots of history there, and not all good. It’s been weird drawing him and reliving some of it. A way I ended up buffering the feelings from the work is leaving his name out, and idealizing his looks from memory, instead of finding appropriate reference. I do tend to draw autobiographical stuff in a more cartoon style for this exact reason.
Anyway, I hope y’all dig this start. It gets down to business next page.
