(yes I did this art for the Sega Genesis game Scooby Doo Mystery)
So it looks like more declines this month than even last month. This is due to Patreon changing the institutions it uses to process patron charges from one in the USA to one in the UK, and your bank may be flagging this as suspicious and declining it. They've also gotten stricter about labeling adult content as such, which I discussed in a post a few days ago.
I've out of frustration delved into the whys and wherefores, and found that from what Patreon says all of these changes are to appease the money handlers so that they can continue to host adult content. It's just more frustrating because they've been addressing the issue afterwards and then being a bit dodgy about it--- they've been good about informing us about upcoming problems before. But according to the official posts about this, those agreements with the banks include legal clauses forbidding them from telling us all the details.
So, no more transparency... around finances, adult material, and who knows what else... they can't say. Is this creepy af?
So I looked very deeply into alternatives... and any that have been suggested over the past few years that are even still around today charge quite a bit more than Patreon does... the cheapest takes 300% as much as they do. Some take up to 60%. So it does seem that Patreon is still actually the best option among competitors and that they are indeed trying to make it work for adult content creators, I have to admit.
It still just sucks being feeling like the pervy relation no one wants you to know is a part of the family... but I guess we are all used to that.
The only real viable option is to set up a subscription/donation on my own website. This would require a lot of back-end work that Patreon already provides, and dealing still with financial institutions like PayPal that don't allow use for adult material and could freeze your account at any time. I don't know... seems to me that a lot of you still enjoy the ease of using Patreon... they have more trust to deal with your CC numbers, plus if you are a patron of multiple people, detaching from Patreon would add hassle, I would think.
So that's it. Mostly an update and breakdown of what I have found to be behind this new roadbump at the big P.
If I were to detach, would you, as a patron, be likely to follow? Would you feel safer going through Patreon? If you were a new patron, would you be more or less likely to sign up as a feature on my own website?
Thanks for your time and attention, me Droogies.
