Hey Droogies, didn't finish page 26 in time. I blame society.
Here's a set of flash I did over the last few weeks for the drawing prompt "June Toon".
I did most of them during June... first "Owl Jolson" from the 1936 Merry Melodies short directed by Tex Avery: "I love to singa". As a child and tween I hated the really old Merry Melodies cartoon, including this one... I just wanted to see Bugs and Daffy. But seeing this again a few years back I was really charmed by it, even with the problematic name of the main character. Apparently I'm not the only one... this cartoon has achieved cult status and was even parodied on South Park.
The second was another Tex Avery character, "Wolfie", whom most everybody knows from his lascivious howling and eyes popping out of his head... but he did have a few cartoons of his own.
Third I did sober Bender, an Idea I had run past a client who is in AA in the past, which he passed on... but I still wanted to draw it up so someone might get it. FYI, the robots of Futurama run on alcohol and sobriety is bad for them... so I fully understand the fortitude it would take as a human in recovery to get this as a tattoo. Concensus is among my friends in the program that it is funny and someone with a sick sense of humor would get it. Anyways I wanted to break out of the mid-twentieth century and do a more modern toon.
Fourth was back to the mid-20th century, the cat shaped cookie that the bulldog Marc Anthony thinks is what has become of his little kitten friend Pussyfoot. I have a sticker of this scene in one of my college sketchbooks.
So here I thought I was done... and so was June. A few days later I was laying these all out on one 11x14" sheet. It was then I noticed I needed one more to fill a corner. I wanted another object like the cookie, and another more modern reference... though I guess at this point it is about 30 years old. My boyfriend William suggested the Gummi de Milo, from the Simpsons 2nd season. This one probably came out the best, lol.
As you know, May was Mermay and I did a few H.P.Lovecraft inspired ones, a resident of Innsmouth, and the Dagon/Rock of Ages piece. I haven't found a prompt for July, so I decided to do some male tattoo style pin-ups, but of course with a further theme. After some brainstorming I settled on revolutionaries.
See you in a few days with pg. 26 and I hope you all had a great holiday and scared the shit out of all the poor dogs in your neighborhood.
Mike
