Drawing Flies cover (dogspunk #1 back cover)

First Page | Previous Page

This piece was one of the first things I colored with a Wacom tablet. It was actually made for the "2nd" printing, the one done by Ka-blam rather than my desktop printer. I still like it quite a bit, though a few things haven't been worked out yet.

1) I hadn't done a very 3-dimensional rendering of Doug's face before this, and it was the hardest part of the drawing. Looking at all of his drawings before, his face is pretty flat and shape is defined by his facial hair... what you see here was the end result of many many redraws of his face. I could easily keep working at it.

2) Mitch isn't blue. It wasn't until the back cover of HTS #4 that I finally decided that Mitch was blue, like Toshio from the Grudge. Also decided then that Feral was Brown/Grey, like an actual wolf (he was green on the cover of HTS #3). I will be making reference to the color change later in Stray Bullet, so now you are in on that joke ;)

I think I made previous reference to the importance of the bus schedule here... it is probably the biggest piece of Feral lore to influence that half-written, not yet drawn story I mentioned in the description alongside Drawing Flies pg.4

One last thing: like I said, this was the second back cover. For the book I had painted (with paints on canvas!) a front cover for the main story which worked, so I kept it. I tried doing the same for the back and it just didn't succeed. See for yourself, lol. I guess it is about as rough as the internal art, but just didn't live up to my intentions for it.

Play around with the levels and see what happens.

Great Stuff. I'd say the painting could benefit by punching up the contrast, but maybe that's an issue with the scan and not the painting itself.
