The duct-taped skateboard is a call-back to "Bonin' in the Boneyard", where Mitch's deck is a bit busted up but for some reason he tries duct-taping his shoe to part of it... here he's taped the two parts together, but still it don't work too well.
The junk in the "pile of dead war machines" is mostly just military scrap... but there is a martian war martian from the George Pal 50's version of "War of the Worlds" (the best version and I would argue best sci fi film of the 50's).
