(continued from pg.8)
...so this was the last installment for the Fight magazine. I had no idea what I wanted to do with this story at this point, and felt like I should quit while I was ahead. The arrangement wasn't a "for pay" one (I got ad space in return), so at least it wasn't a breach of any sort of agreement.
I decided to consult with a writer friend about the story (Dave Zelman, hi Dave!). By this time I had discovered that one of my premises was false; my father's temper was actually passed down from my grandmother, not my grandfather. I had known them both as gentle eldsters, and it was in conversation with my aunt that I learned the truth.
Dave had a very interesting take on my story; that just because we, as gay man, are capable of doing or being something that we are attracted to (such as MMA fighters), doesn't mean we should. I really liked this. It meant that my character would, instead of overcoming his supposed shortcomings regarding violence, he would accept them and be peaceful. So I had an ending, but also a total release of the drive behind making the story... so who knows if I'll ever finish it. I had a resolution.
Dave Zelman and I spent sometime developing a sci-fi/fantasy version of this, which I won't go into in detail in case it eventually gets used. It was a solid concept, and only resembles this story in that the protagonist is a blood sport fighter.
Dave Zelman is the writer of Al Qaeda's Super Secret Weapon , and The Intelligent Design Coloring Book
