Hey Droogies!
I'm having a little contest, a poll, a vote, as it were.
Pictured above is my tattoo inks wall cabinet, which a carpenter client custom made for me about 10 years ago. It originally (up until september) had a heavy frosted glass door... which finally took a dive off of the hinges and shattered on the floor of the shop. A few days ago I realized that I could just replace it with a canvas that was just a fraction of an inch wider and exactly as tall... but what to paint on it?
I have collected a number of sketches to choose from, I'll keep the voting open until next sunday, then the winner will be tabulated. Some of these are sketches for possible paintings, some are tattoo sketches. They are as follows:
Deep Ones are part of the H.P. Lovecraft mythos. The people of Innsmouth made a pact with the fish god Dagon and metamorphose into Deep Ones as they age. Once they are through the change, they go live in the sea. This sketch was maybe part of a C'thulhu tattoo or painting.
Surtur is the Norse King of the Fire Giants. He plays a part in ragnarok, when he lights the earth on fire with his sword. This was a tattoo design, a tattoo I actually did, though I never got a decent picture of it.
Reika Kuze is the tattooed priestess, the main boss villan in the game Fatal Frame 3. The priestess is tattooed to transfer pain and suffering from others to herself. Like other Fatal Frame bosses, she is a woman who had no say in her fate. She is a terrifying figure in the game, but you also feel so sorry for her. She often is invulnerable to your attacks (until the end) but is murmuring about not wanting to see anymore, not wanting to feel anymore... This sketch was intended to be a pin-up someday. More on her...
This gun slinger is from "the Dark Tower", though I never read it. It was for a tattoo, and the better of two versions I drew of him. The Client moved away without getting the tattoo. I'd have to refine the face a bit, it's a little too cartoony.
From Katherine Dunn's novel "Geek Love", Olympia is the narrator of the story. She's an albino hunchback dwarf, who is the barker for the family carnival. Behind her is the attraction poster for Arturo the Aqua-boy, her brother who has but flippers for arms and legs (whom she secretly loves). This was one of a number of sketches for painting ideas I did from the book. In the late '90s I was in a group show of work inspired by the book, I ultimately did a different scene from the story.
Another tattoo sketch, this one has no real backstory. The client liked it when I suggested it, but once he saw it was very against it. I wonder what he was thinking of when I suggested it...
The boss from the first Fatal Frame game, Kirie Himuro has the spirits ot the damned wreathing her head. Another tragic character, she is literally physically tied over the portal to the underworld to keep it from emptying out onto our world. I did this sketch hoping to paint it or tattoo it or make a pin-up of it someday. More on Kirie...
