A More Civilized Q&A - March 2023
Added 2023-04-01 06:23:15 +0000 UTCWelcome to the Q&A for March 2023, sneaking it right in under the wire... at least if you count by Pacific time.
This month, we've got some broader Clone Wars questions and a number of video watch-alongs (with said videos linked below). We also, of course, ramble our way into many side topics, like "who the hell is this kid in the Rebels trailer?" and "who could 1v1 Palpatine?" and, of course, "how would Jedi act on MLB Opening Day?"
Enjoy, and see you on the main feed on April 12th for Dark Disciple!

I think you are missing the point. The hand-wringing about obi-wan is a part of the process. These aren't the type of people to just slog through something they don't actually want to talk about because they think their "fans" want to hear it.

2023-04-28 20:20:25 +0000 UTCI didn't ask them to change it. It's their creative project and they can do what they want with it. That said, they seem to approach a good deal of this content with reluctance: "We know Obi-Wan won't even be ironically enjoyable, but we'll finally force ourselves to watch and discuss it because we have to, because this is a Star Wars podcast." So I wanted to tell them that, if they switch gears, I would support that.

2023-04-28 06:01:55 +0000 UTCDid you really just hop onto a 2+ year old star wars podcast for a month and ask them to change it? They have other podcasts for other media.
2023-04-28 00:50:35 +0000 UTCCan't agree. I like it when a podcast makes me like something more than I did at first. and that is what this pod does. I mean, they made me like the battle droids who I always found annoying. they made me appreciate Jar-Jar!!!!!! That is so much more excited to me than "hey.. this good show is good"

2023-04-17 16:40:59 +0000 UTCHaving just watched the Rebels shorts you’ll be opening on I think it’s safe to say they’ll give you a clear heads up as to who the best Rebels character is.

2023-04-17 07:32:51 +0000 UTCThis may be an unpopular opinion, but I joined because of the Andor episodes: incredible commentary on an incredible show. I would love to see this stellar podcast team pivot away from Star Wars and more generally into media that is, you know... good. I know some of Clone Wars is all right, but hearing such smart people talk about it (and Obi-Wan, the prequels, etc.), often having to hold our noses and roll our eyes, feels like it's really wasting your talents. I hope you don't take this as an insult, because it's totally meant as the opposite: you're such a great team that it'd be wonderful to hear your thoughts on stories that deserve them.

2023-04-14 18:30:10 +0000 UTCman y’all went way harder on Dark Disciple than I think that book warranted. there were definitely some weaknesses, but jeez.

2023-04-13 19:48:35 +0000 UTCFor a future Q&A episode I'd like you to go deeper into the movie solo. I have felt it is a movie centred on its most boring character. To me, Solo is full of interesting characters and implied stories, except Solo. I feel they got some very talented and inspired writers, who were given the supervision of an executive with the conviction that the movie has to be about solo and the attention span of a dog. I feel movies every so often have this problem, I first noticed it watching the blah romantic comedy Failure to Launch on the plane, that all the characters surrounding the main ones were more interesting than it was centred on. Solo fits the bill very well. I mean, the Emilia Clarke movie would be better, a Donald Glover lead Lando movie would be amazing. Having the robot lead a story would be great and also investigate the whole where do robots' agency fit into the ethical/political world. So is Solo a movie brimming with ideas shackled to follow its blandest character?

2023-04-12 17:02:16 +0000 UTCTwo things from Dark Discipline - the Obi Wan "It's... banter" literally made me laugh out loud and should an AMCA bingo card exist references to That Al Pacino line in Heat does need to be on it.

2023-04-12 16:27:08 +0000 UTCfavorite moment is Rob referencing the Christmas special as being 20 years ago… when the 1970s is actually almost 50 years ago now 😂😂😂
2023-04-10 14:22:58 +0000 UTCJust finished Dark Disciple and liked it/it was wild, could be an all time podcast. Mid ending tho
2023-04-05 22:01:56 +0000 UTCMace beats Palpatine down, as long as other Jedi don’t interfere. The only issue is, then we get Mace Windu’s “lawful good” fascist state.

2023-04-05 17:54:21 +0000 UTCI feel like this might be hard to do at this point but I’d love it if they made it to the end credits of the series finale like OG viewers all did to find out who voices Chopper lmao

2023-04-04 08:17:51 +0000 UTCThe whole rebels conversation is so fun, but for what it’s worth, they made character shorts before the show came out, so people watching the first episode had probably seen those and knew names. Rebels starts kind of corny, but I think it benefits from being a post-Lucas show
2023-04-03 21:44:01 +0000 UTCnot me yelling SINUBE at my phone through the whole debate about Who To Narc Palp Out To, then austin got me at about the hour mark. you KNOW sinube would concoct the plan. he would get palpatine talking on live feed and then “just one more thing…” him into doing force lightning in front of god and everybody. thank u for seeing the vision
2023-04-03 17:20:29 +0000 UTCI avoided it for a really long time because I thought the wrist rocket blaster thing Ezra had in all the promos seemed really dumb, but once I sat down and gave the show a chance I enjoyed it.

2023-04-03 16:27:33 +0000 UTCI feel like I was just gaslit for about 20 minutes about jar jar binks haha. No one deserved the level of hate that Best got but the character isn’t good. It’s never been good and that’s ok. Sometimes things miss.

2023-04-03 16:24:37 +0000 UTCSo, after the book and Solo.. it will May 10th for the start of Rebels? I can't wait!

2023-04-03 15:08:46 +0000 UTCThe Wendig novels are actually decent and definitely critical, I hate to say. He was basically excommunicated from Star Wars a couple of years after his last release for being the most absurd Neolib even by mass media standards.

2023-04-02 17:59:12 +0000 UTCAt some point in Rebels during a Q&A, gotta be like 5 minutes where you just look at the LEGO sets released for Clone Wars and Rebels and see what weird design choices got made to make it more cartoony. Vs how the Season 7/modern sets are just the same design choices as all other SW LEGO sets, thus looking much better next to each other. CW LEGO Dooku was…a choice.

2023-04-02 15:05:50 +0000 UTCNot that I would ever, in my life, defend Chuck Wendig, but I truly do think he intended to “redeem” Jar-Jar by making him a clown. This was right before The Force Awakens, so the Prequel hate was still going strong, and Wendig’s godawful books were being falsely marketed as tie-ins to the new films, so they got a lot of clickbait headlines. There were Screenrant articles calling the clown shit “Jar-Jar Binks’ happy ending.” By comparison, the Queenie Julia episodes were unceremoniously dumped on Netflix a year earlier, so the Clone Wars fans who watched Season 6 on release were a niche within a niche of the Star Wars fandom. And even those fans were so focused on the Fives and Yoda arcs that released the same day, there wasn’t a whole lot of discussion on the Jar-Jar episodes at the time. So in 2015 only a handful of people knew Jar-Jar had game, and the incredibly shallow “at least kids think he’s funny” take was still the best defense anyone was giving him. Wendig just copy-pasted that argument into the actual text of his book and said “teeheehee, it’s so meta!”
2023-04-02 12:27:18 +0000 UTCi think coming off where Clone Wars ends up tonally, Rebels probably seems a bit of a let down but i really think it is a really well made piece of childrens television that you can sit back and enjoy as an adult , which is how it was intended (and like don’t worry you still get Clone Wars s7, Tales of the Jedi, and Bad Batch to follow the Clone Wars aesthetic and tone)

2023-04-02 06:37:38 +0000 UTCI don't know who out there is being so negative about Rebels season 1, but for my money it's all bangers from the very beginning! Way better visuals and characters and stories than TCW, to my personal subjective taste.
