Might be nothing more than the shipboard cat. I'd bet money the cat has extra toes compared to other cats where it's from. Sailors often saw polydactyl cats as good luck; the extra toes were helpful to keep said cats on board while underway, and the cats were brought on to keep rodent problems down. Boom! Actual history in fantasy!
