2025-11-07 17:02:13 +0000 UTCI love how the twist with Vergo is set up. It's genius, honestly; the set up is so subtle that you don't even consider it to be the 'Chekov's Gun' situation (ie. "every storytelling element must be necessary, so if something is brought up/shown, even if it's seemingly small/innocuous, it NEEDS to come back into play later") that it clearly is in hindsight and it catches nearly everyone off-guard. And Oda still somehow manages to make it horrifying every time despite going into the flashback knowing that there's no hope for these characters to make it out alive together in the end - because not only you want it SO badly for them anyway, and they're SO close that we almost seem to gaslight ourselves that somehow Oda is wrong and they're going to be okay. This flashback is a masterclass in slight of hands and emotionally ragdolling the viewer around.
