This is silly logic. Just because people in the past married young or because age of consent laws are different doesn’t make this any less weird. Oda isn’t writing a historical piece, he’s writing a fantasy action manga. Just because a certain culture upholds a value doesn’t mean you can’t criticize it. If the age of consent in Japan was 8, would you excuse Oda writing Scarlett to be 8? Oda is a very worldly man and understands a lot about cultures outside his own, so it’s not really an excuse that he made her so young when it doesn’t even add anything good to the story. I’m sorry but Oda made this weird choice, and I think all criticism of it is valid. Oda is writing in the modern day, and he isn’t writing a historical piece. He should have known better and understood that a 15-year-old marrying someone much older than her is fucking weird. And yes, it was bad that people used to give their CHILD daughters away to grown men in the past too, so even though it happened, it’s still fucking weird.

For example cobra tried to arrange a marriage for Vivi, despite a significant age difference. With this kind of cultural traditionalism, oda tries to depict accurate history, I also should mention that even today, Japan's age of concent was 13 for over a century and recently just changed to only 16 in 2023. This is a manga for the japanese audience so it will follow cultural norms and laws of japan, not the USA. This explains why many characters in anime, manga, and video games appear much younger yet are placed in adult situations and romantic storylines. Spain which this arc is influenced from, also has an age of consent at 16 years old, but prior to that was also 13 like japan. Modern readers, especially those from different cultural backgrounds, may find the age differences and portrayals of younger characters in adult scenarios uncomfortable now and unfortantly alot of these stories are under so much scrutinity from readers, even though the time period reflects ancient customs in the story. These sociatal views are not the same in every country in the world not even taking into account the historical time periods, the work is trying to reflect, and people need to understand that.
