I understand every disappointment in this ep. They really stretched the part Usopp running away that it became unbearable 😭 They failed to show that he was running back right after the tontattas keep believing in him. Toei failed Usopp at this time 🤧

Being a coward in a high-pressure/scary situation doesn't inherently mean you're a bad or selfish person - not wanting to die or get hurt is a very human reaction and fear comes from a lack of confidence that you can prevent yourself from being hurt or that you won't be able to handle the consequences. *I* definitely have that with some things, and I'm sure everyone else in these comments do, too - everyone's afraid of something. Self-preservation and managing our fear responses are our literal most important basic human instincts because it's what keeps us ALIVE. My issue with Usopp in this is that *all* Oda/Toei focuses on here is the selfish side of his thoughts: he has you believe until the VERY last second that Usopp is running straight out of there so when he actually DOES come back to do the right thing, I'm not even proud of him overcoming his fears - I'm rolling my eyes at the TV going "yeah, you BETTER, dude". Because choosing to the do the right thing when you're either guilted into it or have no other options left because everything hinges on you really doesn't ever come off that good - especially when he seemingly regresses back to being his overly scared self immediately afterwards every time. I'm not even talking about just this episode either - I'm talking all of the previous ones too where every inner thought we get is him just thinking about himself and HIS escape plan. Plus, Oda not bothering to show Usopp's inner struggle and thought process more and instead making it seem like he's basically *forced* to do the right thing here just because he feels guilty about it also results in what a lot of people are doing in the comments right now - coming up with our own reasons to justify his actions because we don't WANT to hate him but man does Oda's writing of Usopp make that really hard sometimes.
