You guys talking about how the pacing isn't that bad feels like such vindication for the years of gaslighting I've been put through by others and even myself after a certain point. I think I've only really watched this arc once all the way through, whereas I've watched the entire pre-timeskip 4 times at this point, because I had it in my head that it had awful pacing and was boring.

I think the anime doesn't give enough time to show his manipulation, but think about it - if the person who saved you, who seemed like an absolute saint to you for years, who you trusted your life with, suddenly said something absurdly evil, wouldn't you also doubt it and find an excuse for it?
