If you go back to episode 1 at the very start we see Oczy getting tortured so we knew that this was going to happen no matter what (even without that scene its obvious). Oczy's character arc is truly one of the most inspirational and great arcs the last decade of anime. When Badeni tells him that the backup plan has an infinitesimally low chance of working he smiles because there is still hope. Oczy was able to die content. Looking forward to the next episode!
