I love this episode because it illustrates the totalitarian high society of the nobles who in of itself is a product of the corrupted regime of the world. Then we see three kids, come together by circumstances and are now considered a brotherhood who want to go against the world’s views, defy their existence that they are born into and instead be free. We have always known these themes to be so present throughout one piece but here I love how it’s all sort of recontextualized in this one episode. Oda at his best here!

There was no "key" moment where he figured things out, he simply got better over time.

This along with the fact that none of the other flashbacks showed Sabo, might make you believe that Sabo was retconned in. But in fact, in the sake scene in the manga, you can clearly see the shadow of a third sake cup in the panel, alluding to the existence of Sabo. You can also see it in the anime, I think a little less pronounced. When asked about this, Oda said it was in fact a deliberate addition, he just couldn't introduce Sabo during that arc as it would have been too confusing.
