2025-03-02 18:02:36 +0000 UTCI mean Hancock's fruit still needs people to be in love with her even for the kicks to turn people into stone, its just a given that everyone is suceptible to her power beacuse she is the most beatifull woman in the world The only diference in her attacks is based on range and number of people she wants to hit, if it's a close quarters fight she kicks them, if they are a lot of people and far away she use the arrows and so on.

2025-03-02 09:29:52 +0000 UTCLaw was late to arrive because he was still in Sabaody and decided to join after the battle had already started. Especially after seeing Luffy was at the scene. So he didn't want to get involved at first but I think it's unclear whether he would have joined the actual fight if he had arrived earlier although it didn't seem to be his motivation.

Envyus
2025-03-02 05:38:56 +0000 UTCNo this is from Author Comments not the story. Absolute Justice is a core Marine Tenant, but Akainu's personal Justice is Thorough Justice, not Absolute (though it could be considered a sub category)
Envyus
2025-03-02 05:34:00 +0000 UTCAlso speaking about Akainu in comparison to other villains such as Madara, Meruem, Chrollo or even BB. Akainu is just a soldier. He is doing his job without some hidden goal, for example, to rule the world, or gain more power. I can't even say that he loves to fight or kill. He is just doing what needs to be done, without second thoughts. And that made him so simple but special at the same time. He is smart, calm, and at the same time dedicated to his justice.

2025-03-02 04:56:16 +0000 UTCPerfect comparison. Both are unapologetically committed to a cause. Unhealthily so. Askeladd is a slave to his Welsh pride. Akainu is a slave to Absolute Justice
Matthew Gilroy
2025-03-02 04:41:38 +0000 UTCWith Akainu, I think it’s a similar situation as with Askeladd in Vinland Saga. He’s done terrible things, but he’s strong and committed to a goal, that’s respectable. People respect unwavering resolve, even (or perhaps especially) when it follows a “the ends justify the means” approach.

2025-03-02 04:29:15 +0000 UTCThey are certainly all interesting.
Matthew Gilroy
2025-03-02 04:21:28 +0000 UTCAgreed. They understand Akainu's character really well. Hopefully my comment below gives them insight into how Oda expands these concepts into several characters throughout this arc, and in turn linking character work with powerscaling.

2025-03-02 04:15:13 +0000 UTCHyping up episodes is a soft spoiler
Matthew Gilroy
2025-03-02 04:12:39 +0000 UTCExactly. He is 100% committed to the cause, and that is why he is doing most of the work against the significant players. Excellent interplay of character work and powerscaling from Oda👏🏽 He's soloing all the WB commanders, Jimbei, Ivankov and Crocodile as we speak. Compared to the other Admirals and warlords he is not there for fun or by orders. Akainu was the only one trying, and it perfectly reflects his character as an absolute marine who wants to kill the pirate who defines this era and Roger's son. We see the impact just one determined Admiral can have against an Emperor, his forces, and allies. This was the opposite of a close victory for the marines. Now imagine if the other Admirals and warlords went all out like Akainu😂
Matthew Gilroy
2025-03-02 04:02:17 +0000 UTCI feel like this arc has really changed how you guys watch/discuss One Piece for the better. Really looking forward to more of your discussions going forward.

2025-03-02 04:00:12 +0000 UTCWhat makes Akainu especially dangerous and especially interesting to me is that he’s not sadistic. Almost every single antagonist that carry his traits manipulative intelligent powerful ruthless violent competent are also sadistic which is ultimately there flaw. You can look across media from stuff like game of thrones to hunter hunter and you will find characters like this. But Akainu is in no way sadistic he talks shit but not to gloat only to trick his opponents into bad positions. He will kill civilians not because he secretly enjoys it and is using “I’m just following orders as an excuse” but because he genuinely believes it’s the only way. Akainu is confident but not arrogant cruel but not sadistic he has none of the usual weaknesses heroes use to defeat villains.

2025-03-02 03:43:11 +0000 UTCI didn't know if this had been revealed yet, so I didn't include it in my comment below😂 I'm too lazy to edit it in now😅 "Absolute justice" for Akainu btw But yeah, hopefully Boldcast sees that Akainu was the only one really fighting. An excellent showcase of Oda's ability to link character work with powerscaling. It goes deeper than just "vibes"
Matthew Gilroy
2025-03-02 03:40:16 +0000 UTCIn the same panel he says " If you're gonna do it, finish the job!!". Yeah he felt no remorse😅
Matthew Gilroy
2025-03-02 03:34:42 +0000 UTCFor Akainu, his style of Justice is called Thorough Justice. To contrast Aokiji’s Lazy Justice, and Kizaru’s Unclear Justice.
Envyus
2025-03-02 03:33:50 +0000 UTCSpeaking about crocomom :D I feel that his behavior changed when he saw the WB decision on Skward actions. Also, it seems to me, that Crocodile faced WB a long time ago(Crocomom said can't believe that he losed to such a weak man, when Skward stabbed WB)
Jack Shadow
2025-03-02 03:29:03 +0000 UTC(at this point in the story at least), I personally find the other two more interesting, but they're all pretty close. The Admirals are amazing characters
SomeoneElse
2025-03-02 03:29:01 +0000 UTCAnd this is exactly how Oda expertly links character work with powerscaling. Akainu was the ONLY Admiral or 7 Warlord to go all out, or even moderately try. Your explanation of his character traits is masterful. His character was directly linked to his exert of power in this arc. As you said, the other Admirals and 7 Warlords were strictly there for either orders or fun.
Matthew Gilroy
2025-03-02 03:27:35 +0000 UTCAkainu: "Absolute Justice". He is a great character.

2025-03-02 03:26:48 +0000 UTCHe did, we didn't see his eyes there, so he was just doing what was necessary in his eyes.
Jack Shadow
2025-03-02 03:25:09 +0000 UTCFor me, Akainu is just the best antagonist of One Piece. He didn't try to act like he came to this war to have fun or because of order. No, Akainu actually believes that pirates and outlaws should be in jail or dead. Also, he never showed any respect to Whitebeard or any pirate that he met, except Roger, but he probably was just playing words because I doubt that he ever respected Roger. Unlike Sengoku and Garp who accepted Marinford's destruction by Whitebeard's hands, Akainu never gave up and never surrendered. He just knew one thing: he had to do something. And if Red Dog chose you as his target, it's over for you. Akainu is truly dedicated, Marrine, who is Lawful Evil, the perfect type of antagonist, and he believes that he is doing the right thing. He believes that he is fighting for normal people, for peace in the world.
Jack Shadow
2025-03-02 03:23:47 +0000 UTCKizaru is also based off an actual actor, Kunie Tanaka. Tanaka acted in crime and yakuza films, often experiencing complex and challenging arcs, with themes of morality and ambiguity. I think Kizaru, up to this point, is a really interesting character👍🏽
Matthew Gilroy
2025-03-02 03:15:07 +0000 UTCInteresting, up to Marineford I would classify Kizaru as "unpredictable" and "unreadable" more so than the "Banality of Evil"🤷🏾♂️
Matthew Gilroy
2025-03-02 03:10:15 +0000 UTCAbsolutely, completely 100% disagree. Kizaru is not nuanced at all. Can't really get into it because of spoilers, but he might actually be the flattest of the high ranking marines characters, and that's his defining characteristic. He represents people who will just nod their heads and go along with atrocities. He's just The Banality of Evil, and that's it. That's his entire character. Personally, I think that the simplicity of Kizaru is actually what makes him the most evil of the three admirals; his detached, insouciant, flippant attitude towards murder is like a psychopathic child pulling the wings off of a butterfly. No nuance, no moral conflict, no conscience. Just evil. They tell him to kill, and he kills, and he remarks sarcastically and tells jokes while he does it because he gives zero fucks about human life. Akainu kills because the world is a violent place and because killing is the only way to get things done. When he sunk the evacuation ship, it was through gritted teeth because a single scholar escaping would mean that they'd need to Buster Call a whole nother island and kill thousands more. Hundreds now, or spare them and have to kill tens or hundreds of thousands later? People paint Akainu as pure evil, but he actually does give a shit about civilians. He's not just a bootlicker collecting a paycheck like Kizaru, he actually believes that he's saving the world. He sees himself as an honorable man despite the fact that he lies and cheats, because he does it to kill pirates, and there's nothing more honorable than that. He chases down Luffy relentlessly because Luffy is truly dangerous. He's got 20 in Charisma. He naturally draws people to him. He also let hundreds of dangerous criminals out of a high security prison and defeated two warlords, whose job it is to suppress weaker pirates. In their wake, countless pirates are free to roam around and wreak whatever havoc they like. If Luffy escapes, he'll cause more chaos. It's the same thing as Ohara. Better to kill some now than have thousands die later, and I'm just scratching the surface. Akainu is by FAR the most complex of the three. I was going to type more about Akainu and some about Aokiji and Garp (who are very similar), but I have to leave for dinner with my family in six minutes and I haven't even gotten dressed yet, but honestly, even writing this took a while and I don't think I care enough to write even more to convince strangers on the internet on my day off. Have a nice night!
Isaac Sato
2025-03-02 03:03:46 +0000 UTCYep. He has no conflicting feelings at all. There is no nuance. He is a stalwart marine. In contrast with Aokiji and Kizaru
Matthew Gilroy
2025-03-02 02:41:04 +0000 UTCGreat Jesse impression Carson lmao. Jinbei does not rest man, how many Ws did he farm this arc? Clearly not enough. It's so rewarding seeing Blackbeard getting smacked right after talking his shit lmao.

2025-03-02 02:36:23 +0000 UTCThe circumstances of Marineford (trying to defeat the pirate that defines this era, and executing Roger's son) demands that Akainu takes the centre stage in focus and character, given his portrayal of being the "absolute marine". We know Kizaru and Aokiji are more nuanced than this. Marineford was not an opportunity to delve into these characters. Oda knew this at the time. I talk about this in my comment below that I highly suggest reading👍🏽
Matthew Gilroy
2025-03-02 02:25:50 +0000 UTCI don’t think Akainu or Sakazuki had any remorse or conflicting feelings for destroying the evacuation ship at Ohara.

2025-03-02 02:13:54 +0000 UTC10/10 on the Akainu stuff. I completely agree, he's the most interesting admiral by far.
Isaac Sato
2025-03-02 02:08:23 +0000 UTCI mean yeah, Akainu is respectable. I expand more on this in my comment below👍🏽 I wouldn't disagree if one respected Akainu more than Garp honestly.
Matthew Gilroy
2025-03-02 02:07:40 +0000 UTCI 100 appreciate your discussion of akainu. Putting myself back in this episode, I always hate the two main villains Blackbeard and akainu. But I grew respect and understanding like you guys for the exact reason you describe.

2025-03-02 02:00:29 +0000 UTCWhen it comes to the Navy and their place and symbol within the world, the dialogue takes a couple of extra layers. Love that you brought up Belmer cuz she's one of the few we know who actually retired from the Navy. For different reasons but still she was a hero for her time, even in her own tiny version of the bigger world. Now with Garp, Smoker, Koby and Akainu the conversation keeps branching up.
Sanji Joestar
2025-03-02 01:57:35 +0000 UTCThe Black Beard method. Step 1 talk shit Step 2 get your shit rocked Step 3 profit Somewhere in there you conceptualize and execute a genius scheme but really that’s secondary to the primary 3 steps.

2025-03-02 01:55:25 +0000 UTCCaptain Buggy! Captain Buggy ! The Hero we never knew we needed. Crocodile channeling his inner pettiness to not let the Navy claim another Win after Ace and Whitebeard. We'll take that. And now we have Trafalgar Law! What's his deal!!
Sanji Joestar
2025-03-02 01:54:08 +0000 UTCAkainu is such a terrifying pursuing force that I'm convinced his taunt over Ace is just A way to get to him. Jinbe and the others TRYING to run away from him just shows it's almost impossible to run away from him unless people keep standing in the way. Whitebeard was fighting Kizaru, Marco was cuffed and the others barely made it to them when it happened. Not to mention that Luffy's legs gave in around that time, he couldn't even stand up. Ace might be irrational for responding to his jabs but it might have been a better option for him to protect Luffy that way than Akainu catching up to them. Just look at Jinbe, he almost got Ace'd too😭

2025-03-02 01:49:19 +0000 UTCNOTE👀🔥🔥😈: This is to do about both character writing and power in One Piece so far. I highly suggest reading this👍🏽 To Lindsey's point about Akainu being more interesting than the other Admirals, bear in mind that if you think about it, the characters at Marineford haven't been explored that much in the story so far. This applies to most characters. Like think about it, how much focus have we had on characters like Kizaru, Marco, Jimbei, Sengoku etc where we had a deep dive and exploration of their characters? What I respect about Marineford is that it can be such an entertaining arc despite us not knowing much at all about these characters from a character writing perspective. I can't wait for the next 700 episodes and beyond🔥 And you know, Akainu really shined this arc as he represents absolute justice. A marine through and through. The heavy focus on him in this arc makes 100% sense. He finds it paramount to defeat Whitebeard and carry out Ace's execution. On the other hand, we have Kizaru and Aokiji. A lot more nuanced. They haven't been a focus in this arc because of this. They represent other kinds of justice. I can't remember if these have been mentioned so I won't say them here. But yeah, Marineford isn't an arc where Kizaru and Aokiji would shine. It wouldn't really fit for their characters to be explored here, when there traits established so far act as a hindrance for them to really get involved in the war. The same could be said for some Warlords too. From a writing perspective, it would make sense for us to explore these characters when the time is right P. S. Carson, I still disagree with your "vibes" argument. One Piece is a lot more complicated and nuanced than people give it credit for. Not just in themes like with Skypeia, but also power. Like here 41:46 where you say the Navy forces were rivalled by one pirate Armada and that it was pretty close. Pretty disingenuous, no?😅 The Warlords weren't really involved and when they were they effortlessly shut that shit down (like Doflamingo and Kuma with Oars). Similarly, Akainu was the only Admiral that really fought Whitebeard. And even after his battle with Whitebeard, he's now fighting all the WB commanders, Jimbei, and Ivankov etc by himself. Interestingly, this directly relates to my point about the traits of some characters established so far that kind of explain why they weren't really involved in the war at all and didn't go all out at all. Carson, you say it yourself this episode. Kizaru is focusing on fodder for the most part, and Aokiji just "thumbs ups" Jimbei😂. This episode really puts into perspective all the things I've been saying. Can't wait for the rest🔥🔥
Matthew Gilroy
2025-03-02 01:46:41 +0000 UTCDont know if it ever gets mentioned in the anime, but every Admiral (and some vice admirals) follows his own type of justice which are labeled as: Absolute Justice (Akainu), Lazy Justice (Aokiji) & Unclear Justice (Kizaru)
Domi No
2025-03-02 01:43:37 +0000 UTCYeah Akainu is a scary dude

2025-03-02 01:42:49 +0000 UTCAkainu is a goat. The man is soloing everyone despite having recently been hit by two point-blank quake attacks by Whitebeard. Aokiji and Kizaru just chilling and being laid back as usual. Crocodile once again coming in clutch, having stopped a previous Ace execution attempt, and now saving Luffy's life when it matters the most. Packed episode🔥🔥
