2025-01-12 06:26:16 +0000 UTCthis will become clearer as you watch more (EP 2 already mostly cleared it up but i'll explain anyway), it's something a japanese or chinese watcher would know going in so it's not really a spoiler: Families could sell their children into service (at the rear palace or other places). In return they would get a cut of the child's salary. It's unclear at this point if palace management knows about the kidnappers and allows it, if the kidnappers "sold" Maomao to a different family who is listed as her family (and receiving a cut of her money) or if the kidnappers themselves pretended she was their sister/daughter to profit off of her work

So it's kinda hilarious to me when Maomao says "I need a drink" (talking about sake) like she's a middle aged business man xD
