They really did an amazing job with a character like Bojji, who despite is disabilities in communication, is able to communicate emotions SO CLEARLY to the viewer! The thing that I really love about this show is aside from how gorgeous it is and is very visually unique for traditional anime, the way that the characters are established is really intriguing! Just in the same way you have realized and just like in real life, sometimes intentions aren't easy to read when it comes to what people say vs what people do!
