EARLY UNCUT: Gilmore Girls 6X08 Reaction

Comments

At this point, Logan is just Jess with money imo. Both have problematic parents and a somewhat dysfunctional family, grow up to be a rebellious teen/young adult, both feel like life decisions are forced on them. Both can sometimes be jerks. The difference here is in how Rory responds to them. When she dated Jess she was a star student with a goal, so it didn't matter that Jess dropped out of school - she stayed on track. Now that she's hitting a bottom at Yale she joins Logan in partying around and doing less meaningful stuffs. That's why Jess said "Screw him, this isn't about him. What's going on with you?"

azksh

"It's not all we DO!" :)) When he argues with Rory after the Jess encounter..

Yasemin

stay with logan.. trust! it’s literally like a one ep fluke to make jess seem better. also, yes logan does technically have a choice but that would mean his family cutting him off completely (not just financially) which is making him feel pretty trapped in that regard. also, as for jess, while he did have growth off-screen, i feel like it really wasn’t his place to argue these things to rory. like while they were true, he definitely doesn’t know rory better than anyone else. they dated for what, like a month?

talia

bro the writers made logan act like that for this one ep to make jess look so much better

lulu belle

And I totally believe you have valid reasons to dislike Logan and Rory’s relationship too. The show gives us plenty of reasons to not like any of them, which is why I have my reservations about all of her relationships. But once Joe finishes the show, we can talk more openly about it.

Flavia Barcellos

the way i’m so impressed by this i can’t even disagree😭😭. so well put. i think the main reason i and a lot of others are jess girls is bc we dislike who she becomes when she is with logan, and put the chemistry of jess and rory above all. but rory and logan do fit. the lazy characterisations you talk about actually explain a lot about why i’ve always enjoyed the build up to relationships more than when they actually date. i think a lot of shows are similar - it’s just having characters randomly regress to create drama when they seemed so perfect before. i still can’t help but love jess’ sudden character development.. like okay if rory doesn’t want him here i’ll step up !!

Lara

I completely agree with this take!

Line Johansson

Logan were acting like a jerk, but I blame Rory for putting him in that position, going behind her boyfriend s back planning to going out with an ex. And Logan was obviously going through a crisis and she doesn't even seem to notice or care... I'll always root for Rory being happy but she keeps inviting drama in...

Sofie K.

Rory inviting an ex into her bedroom at night is honestly such a red flag, no matter how innocent it might have been.... Still a Rory fan but my lord she's never been a good girlfriend....

Sofie K.

I get what you're saying. Personally, I wouldn’t have a problem with Jess and Rory ending up together. That’d be fine by me. My issue is more with the style of storytelling—it feels lazy and it’s the same pattern you see with Lorelai’s boyfriends too. I don’t buy into the whole “Jess knows Rory better than anyone” thing; that’s way over the top. Plus, I don’t think anyone really knows someone at 16. I get that Rory’s storyline is meant to show that people go through tough times, question themselves, change paths, get lost, and find their way back—and that’s all normal. I just don’t think it’s a matter of values, which is why the scene felt so forced to me. We like what Jess says because it’s what we want Rory to do, but him making all these judgments about who she is without knowing the full context of what brought her to this point, or what’s been going on with her during the years they weren’t even talking, just shows that Jess doesn’t actually know her better than anyone. Who knows Rory better than anyone? Lorelai. So yeah, my issue is with the narrative and how the scene was put together. It feels like they just threw a bone to Jess fans to keep them hooked. Even though I think Jess is alright, I can’t really get into all my thoughts on Rory’s romantic interests because of spoilers. But one thing I do believe: the right person shows up at the right time. If you’re the right person at the wrong time, you’re still the wrong person.

best scene of the show

Lara

i've never read anything like this before you devoured that. still a jess defender forever though. the way that he spoke to her here was needed and i'd argue that he does know her as well as he says, she seemed pretty dumbfounded. jess and rory are the epitome of right person wrong time for me. he wasn't ever mature enough for her and by the time they reunite here rory has changed a lot in her values and who she surrounds herself with.

Lara

WHY DID YOU DROP OUT OF YALEEEE???????????? best fucking scene ever.

Lara

I've watched these episodes countless times, and I can't help but notice that Amy Sherman-Palladino has this clear pattern of changing character behavior whenever she wants to stir up some drama, especially when it comes to romantic interests. This episode is a perfect example. Remember when Rory first met Dean? He was this cool guy, rocking a leather jacket, who had just moved from Chicago. He was reading Moby Dick and had this sharp sense of humor. Fast forward to season two, and suddenly, Dean becomes this small-town, boring guy who doesn't have much to offer compared to the new kid—who, of course, is wearing a leather jacket and has a sharp sense of humor about books. Then, when Rory starts dating Jess, he becomes the worst boyfriend ever, and Dean... well, Dean becomes the good guy again. Now he's an athlete, dating a beautiful girl, and constantly reminding Rory that he was the one who treated her right, not Jess. Jump to the Yale years, and Rory’s dating Dean again. But suddenly, he’s back to being boring, a liar, and definitely not what she deserves compared to Logan—the new charming guy who can keep up with her intellectually, is unpredictable, and shows her all the things Dean doesn’t. Oh, and Logan is witty and also loves books... Then, Rory and Logan are doing great, dating for a year, when Jess reappears at just the right moment—right when Logan randomly starts acting like a jerk for the first time. Suddenly, Jess becomes the voice of reason, giving Rory a moral lecture about who she really is, claiming he knows her better than anyone (he doesn’t) after dating her for six months, disappearing, and then telling her she can't drop out of Yale (even though he dropped out of high school and once asked her to leave college to run away with him). Now Jess looks like the most reasonable and admirable character ever, even though this dialogue doesn't reflect their relationship at all. So, the reason there’s no consensus on who Rory’s best boyfriend is, is because the answer is always: the next one. Every time someone new shows up or someone from the past returns, that person becomes the best option. And then the cycle continues.

The next episode is also iconic

Sashwathi Sriganesh

ICONIC EPISODE!! Everyone is obsessed with Jess just for this one episode even though he was a terrible boyfriend🤦‍♀️ but I do love mature Jess

Sashwathi Sriganesh

unpopular opinion but jess had no ground to stand on this ep. i agree with him, but it really wasnt his place. he treated rory like absolute shit, tried to assault her, and was guilty of everything he ridiculed her for. he took his time to be ready for his life and she was doing the same, just at a different point in her life. logan was definitely a prick this ep but he wasnt completely wrong, she did choose how her life was going and how she handled it and even though i agree with her taking a break it wasnt anyones choice but her own. i hope this ep doesnt make or break your opinions on either character, logan was a prick and jess had good points but thats not the only important parts of their characters or arcs, every character has good and bad eps.

Macyn Chappell

The chemistry just hits different man, Milo and Alexis are so great together

wanira 11

The "WhY Did yOu DrOp oUT of YAaaalee?! Speech solidified it for me: team Jess for life!! Truly one of the most iconic moments of gilmore girls and one of the best episodes this season

wanira 11

Logan is insufferable with his "life forced on me" rant this EP, especially considering that he, too, stole a boat (with Rory) and had to do ZERO community service. :)

Yasemin

Unpopular opinion here but if my ex who treated med badly our entire relationship came back after not speaking for a long time just to yell at me about how my life was a mess after being back for a day I would not be happy haha I mean he did have some points and it’s good he got through to her but I still think he was a bit of an ass imo haha, and Logan was a jerk but he does make some points too, rory can do whatever she wants and does not have to go out with him and his friends if she doesn’t want to, Logan is clearly going trough a life crisis of his own and all she has to say is ”but you’re rich and can do anything” when she is also rich and can do anything and will have her family’s support no matter what while Logan really only can do one thing or else he probably looses his family, money and with that the ability to do whatever he wants with his life, I just don’t think he’s being a crybaby for having a hard time with dealing with the situation and feeling lost and rory does not even try to see his side when he has been nothing but supportive of her situation, he clearly wanted her to go back to school while respecting her decisions and letting her do what she needed to do (this was longer than I planned haha sorry, rant over)

Line Johansson

Love how you were routing for some Rory&Jess alone time, "bye Logan, you drunk!" LOL

Yasemin

What moment is that at? I don’t even remember doing it💀

Joe

Yeah great impression there lol

Yasemin

Iconic quote!

Christina Dam Simonsen

The Freudian slip of Emily’s, calling Richard Rory’s father, is pretty telling to her frame of mind. Like, in a way, she sees Rory living with them as some weird second chance to “raise” her into the rich folk lifestyle of tea parties & such.

Hope

As a Logan fan, yeah this is not his best episode. But he is flawed just like every other character. He is spoiled and privileged just like Rory and was dealing with his own shit and handled it badly. But it was a wake up call they both needed, Rory especially so its good

sandrinegeller

We were speculating just this morning, because you seem to have mentioned something about the intro credits spoiling things (on your DC upload), and specifically mentioned MILO, so we thought you might have been referring to this EP and being spoiled lol, but really, really glad it was just a coincidence mention! lol. Just as your perfect timing of saying...maybe it will be JESS lol

Yasemin

the “i’m a bad mother” scene breaks my heart without fail each time. ugh!
