You mention on the intro scene asking hasn't Jess been at that school for 6 years. No. Each season is 1 full full year. In the first season Jess taught at the first school where she was then laid off for the start of season 2. That's when she tried to get a job at schmidt's danger party. She then landed a job at coolidge after a while. There she was a teacher and about when Coach returned she became vice principal. Then before jury duty Dr. Foster broke his leg. She was going to be principal, but couldn't due to jury duty. When she returned Dr. Foster had retired after breaking his leg, and Principal Cavatapi took over. Jess hated working for her and in the episode with CiCi moving out of her apartment, she quit being Vice Principal for coolidge. Then after a bit of time she got offered a position at Banyon Canyon(her current school) after solving the Nick and Dr. Sam problem. Then we found out earlier in season 6 that the principal was leaving. Jess had to earn her position among the parents, and is now starting the new school year. So she was at banyon canyon 2 years before becoming principal. Just season 5 and season 6 and now towards the end of season 6 finally accomplished her goal of becoming principal.
