You understood correctly. Adam never actually existed. And now watching the reactions you can see it. When Rya is talking to Candy... Candy never actually confirmed that Danny had a brother. She knew the Adam personality - after all she knew about the alters even if she didn't know what it really meant. But she never confirmed the existence of a brother. I actually really think the show was great. And I never really found the initial episodes slow or boring either. But I had an idea of what the show was about when I started watching it. Maybe that tiny spoiler that I got is what made the show better for me. Oh and the book that the show is based on is about a true story. The actual case is actually famous because of the verdict. But the show is quite loosely based on that. So they didn't claim based on true events, because the story is really quite different.
