2023-06-01 18:03:31 +0000 UTCThat's the thing though. People don't just grow, they also regress, and sometimes they change for the worse. I think only be willing to accept linear positive character growth makes for a flawed viewer. I think it's far more interesting to see a character who seemingly has everything and is on "the right path" struggle and stumble anyway, because that's how life is. In Rory's case, I feel like her self-hood gets too tied up with whoever she is romantically involved with. Her personality shifts depending on who she is spending time with. This is extremely common for most people in reality and is hardly ever addressed in any longform storytelling, so I find it very interesting to watch.

2023-05-31 20:42:10 +0000 UTCThis is very well put. I think that's why I kinda roll my eyes whenever I see anyone going on a "Rory is the worst" tirade. Because really, she's a mostly good person that generally has good intentions and tries her best, who sometimes makes mistakes like any other teenager. It makes sense to dislike choices that she makes or mistakes she makes (just as you can any character in the show - like Lorelei herself here). But I don't understand why people sometimes can't accept flaws in their protagonists. Even if the show isn't "properly punishing" them for their flaws, that isn't always necessary imo Well didn't mean to go on my own tirade lol But basically I'm just saying that I agree with you all the way.

2023-05-31 18:02:25 +0000 UTCOmg when you said “oh I feel like I can breathe again since she went to the bathroom” after Lorelai’s chat with sherry saying thanks for making Christopher the way he is now and I didn’t realize til you said that that I was also like holding my breath bc that talk was rough for Lorelai haha I was like deep breath when she went in the bathroom lol. What I like about this show is that it is so real at times, and our main characters aren’t put on a pedestal like a lot of shows. There are times where they aren’t perfect and make mistakes and do bad things like real people. Like sherry is super nice, but in real life we might be salty like Lorelai was even though we have no reason to dislike our exes new partner other than jealousy.

It's not her fault that Christopher is finally taking respnsibilities and Lorelai is not even feeling guilty that she slept with him while they were having a rough patch. That egging scene is bad image for them and never was funny!
