This episode hurts so much. Because it was always obvious that Jack loved his Mum so much. But at the same time, I feel like it became clear very quickly that he spent a lot of his life trying to protect her. Now that's not to say she didn't do her own protecting of him too, but he definitely got to a stage where he saw her as his responsibility. Just like Nicky. I mean, it's a very obvious part of his character. He spent most of his life as a protector for his Mum and Brother because his Dad was an abusive POS. And while it is heartbreaking for them both that they didn't really keep in touch as much as they should've, and that they never really went to see each other, it totally makes sense. And I do blame his Dad. And I mean, they both held part of the blame too, for never making more of an effort. But that is a direct result from that man. He made her feel like she was a burden to everyone, and she didn't want to be that to Jack like she would've felt she had been for most of his life. And Jack wanted more than anything to put that part of his life behind him and unfortunately she was a part of that life. Plus, they had triplets, like they said, and so making that journey would be a nightmare. They both loved each other, and wanted to see each other more, but neither could bring themselves to do it because of Stanley hanging over their heads. Like Jack said on the phone. It does make me wonder about Nicky though... Did he know she died? Was he invited to the funeral? Did she know he was alive? Why did he never try to get in touch with her? We know what happened with him and Jack, of course. But you do have to wonder about their Mum. I think the biggest reason to doubt she ever knew the truth is that Jack wouldn't have the heart to tell her about it because he would know that it would break her heart, plus he obviously did not want to talk about it. But is there another way she would've found out? When he was discharged? Idk. I just find it kinda weird it wasn't brought up. Only mention of Nicky in this episode is Jack suggesting that it was Nicky who liked hotdogs and soup and his mum insisting it wasn't.

I wish we could cross through time because Debbie and Mike would be the perfect addition to Nicky, Miguel and Rebecca's squad

2023-05-15 00:51:21 +0000 UTCI'd go into episodes like this, or the one with Randall's birth mother, thinking that it'll be interesting, but it won't affect me so much because they're not characters we know all that well...and then BOOM. I become a fucking mess -- thanks, TIU. 😭

2023-05-14 20:33:00 +0000 UTCOh Joe.. Once again, thank you so much for your reaction. I was the same way when I watched the episode for the first time - held it together until Jack said I don't have a mom anymore 😭 I love Jack, but he's not perfect, like every human being, we can see in this episode he could've done more to be a part of her life. It's a bit like with Nicky, I know he had his reasons, but he completely cut him of his life. Like Kevin said in an episode when he went to see Nicky for the first time - a son sometimes has to fix his father's mistakes. I love the show for making each character complex and flawed even though on paper they may seem perfect, like Jack or Randall. Beautiful episode of an absolutely brilliant show. It breaks your heart in a way not many shows do. I agree about the director - great job and acting as always top notch.
