The ending didn't surprise me at all. Homelander is a great manipulator, he knows what strings to pull to make ATrain never want to betray him (I mean ATrain probably wants to, but he's too coward to put any plan against him into action). Moreover, as long as Homelander has that much power, ATrain will not dare to even open his mouth.

The first episode of season 1 established how the real problem is vought and the story shifts based on who is in power. Taking Homelander down has been the main goal for Butcher but the idea of "The Boys" is to take down whatever corrupt power allows for innocent people to be hurt, and that conflict exists outside of Homelander. I would understand if he was the same character from season 1 but even he has changed throughout. Do I think he needs to die at a certain point? Yes but I don't think the story is at that point where he has gotten stale. And as long as they are able to write more threatening and complex villains (backed by amazing actors) I don't see why this show couldn't continue without him
