This is the 2nd time that she has explained her feelings for Stefan this way, and to me it just sounds like Stefan was a security blanket, she just lost her parents and was depressed, and then she met and clung to Stefan to keep from drowning in her sorrow. Then once she was past her sorrow she slowly started falling in love with Damon but kept denying it because she didnt want to be compared to Katherine and wanted to be loyal to her safety net.
