it means way more to rachel to be monica's maid of honor considering they grew up together, it made a lot more sense! Monica's weight insecurities are a big part of her so I found her storyline with chandler pretty realistic, remember that she lost weight and did a whole revenge plan because of that? it really hits deep for her and brings back a lot of bad feelings so her reaction to chandler and her empathy toward the other girl make perfect sense

She is Monica's best friends since forever and has always been closer to her. she also was way more coinvincing than phoebe during the competition. I'm actually always pissed when Ross and Joey choose phoebe lol ... I also think monica and chandler conversation was important, we can't blame monica to have these doubts, needing reassurance and talk about it with her fiancée
