I think the season integrates stuff that was happening in the 80s really well. Serial killers were a relatively new spectacle and people didn't understand why people would kill, basically at random. That's why the references to Ted Bundy and the general talk about serial killers. But more importantly, there was a phenomenon called Satanic Panic overtaking the United States, and those who listened to rock music or did anything slightly weird were blamed to be satanic cultists. There's a true crime case on this referred to as the West Memphis 3, where three teenagers were accused of murders because they wore black, listened to rock and were generally "weird." Those teenagers were imprisoned for 18 years and released on a technicality. That case really stuck with me, and that's why Eddie's arc really resonated with me. And the history of the era adds an extra layer to the season, imo.
