I dont think it was rushed or out of the blue at all. I think you have this idea that because those type of relationships worked out in Vampire Diaries and Twilight but the reason those worked out is because the girl changed. Buffy is the vampire slayer, she has to be mortal, her relationship with Angel was never going to work. It might feel rushed because it is coming up to the spin off time but I think it was more a of a veil dropping and Angel realising some hard truths after the mayor and Joyce talked to him. I suppose because I have watched both series multiple times it feels like it all makes sense when I watch it. I dont remember what it felt like to watch this season when it first aired because it was so long ago.

A life with someone who will never age and can't start a family with you and can't even have sex with you without losing his soul is not a good life. He was being selfless and he was right
