100% agree. A few reactors of Buffy, not just Joe, have had issue with villians each episode... and are missing the point that the season arc, and the series arc as a whole is more important, and individual "weekly" bad guys, are just the day in, day out side of her being the slayer, or are metaphors/ ways to explore a new idea of theme of the life/emotional sides of the characters.

If it helps you enjoy the show more: pretty much the only villains that matter in BTVS are the season-arc villains. The others are there as means for character exploration/development and to move the plot along - they're not really there to be great challenges to Buffy. A lot of the time, they act as metaphors for whatever issue the episode is exploring. Like in Dead Man's Party, the episode was exploring the destructiveness of unexpressed/buried emotions, and at the exact moment everyone finally starts airing their feelings the zombies come crashing through the window (that's one of the least subtle metaphors this show uses, lol). If you mainly focus on what each episode is trying to explore, it becomes less disappointing when a villain of the week is a bit lame. Like, this ep's villains were there to show that Buffy's attempts at normalcy are always thwarted by her duty as a slayer, and to show that being a slayer is actually who she is - she can't just separate herself into the part of her that is "Buffy" and the part that is "The Slayer". [The season-arc villains are also metaphors ofc, but they're metaphors for the season-arc theme/s, rather than the mini-themes of each episode, which is why they tend to be more formidable and are developed/built up to over the entire season].
