If I remember correctly, I read somewhere that part of the symbolism behind the hell dimension was society's use of capitalism and the work force, namely in America--forcing labor on people until they're too old to work, expunging any semblance of individuality they might have in favor of production, and then spitting them out once they're done with them. Also, hence why the hammer and the handheld sickle-looking weapon (a mambele) that Buffy used to fight the demons that kept the humans in check resembled the symbol for communism/Marxism. Idk if any of that was intentional but I think the metaphor fits a little too well to not at least be slightly intentional lol

My favourite part is when the camera focuses on a popping first day of school and it builds up moving life a lot going on with we all can be and then super depressing switch to Buffy on a washed up bed looking a mess with her hands on a can opener ready to eat looks like beans from a can descriptive how gloomy mode she is compare to popping life. I mean you can replace the can of beans to bag of Ramen noodles or box of mac and cheese which according to statistics is the common top unhealthy foods that we choose during how Xander put it, depression night. No one reactor that seen this episode has made talked about it. Josh in 2001 interview brings that up.
