The problem is that Spencer is a recovering drug addict and by using sth to help her sleep she´s starting to rationalize drugs again. "I just wanna sleep", "I just wanna get rid of my anxiety" and before she knows it she depends on it. Same with the pills she would´ve gotten from the hospital. She said that she "needed them" which is already showing her addictive behavior again. And let´s not forget that the pills Spencer was addicted to were messing with her sleep. So I´ve always agreed with her mom and weary of her behavior. Even if weed isn´t necessarily bad, for her it could be kind of a gateway back to addiction.
