Finally catching up on your Buffy reactions. I don't care for this episode. Like you, I love a good twist but that he was just a guy trapped in a puppet body was stupid.

2019-03-15 07:56:38 +0000 UTCI thought this was a re-post of episode 5 so I never watched it and was suuuper confused when episode 10 came out ... but now I have 2 to watch! Yay!

2019-02-22 10:44:32 +0000 UTCI agree that the show should be called "Buffy the Supernatural Slayer or just Buffy the Slayer" even though vampires are still the main and most frequent creature.

2019-02-20 18:24:57 +0000 UTCThe fact that this episode was even close to getting an 8 and you're speaking this highly of the show already makes me so, so excited for you to get further in. I really like that you're appreciating the character dynamics - one of the main reasons I disagree with people who recommend skipping S1 altogether is that you'd miss out on those relationships being built. Plus I'm glad that someone else finally recognises Buffy as the MVP of the show. She's been underrated for too long!

2019-02-20 17:17:30 +0000 UTCYeah this episode has a lot of good things and some missed opportunities, but I think my favorite bit is that this episode really shows the developing chemistry between Buffy, Willow, Xander, and even Giles, as you mentioned. Also, the introduction of Principal Snyder as a red herring. If you've ever seen any of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, he's the same actor who played Quark. Now that you are this far in I'll say imo ep 4, 5, 8, & 9 are the weakest of the season. They all have some good things going for them, but they don't come together as well as the others. The next two are stronger and the finale competes with ep 7 as the best of the season. P.S. The show continues to be creepy and Buffy crush-worthy, even while stabbing people with twigs. lol

2019-02-20 17:16:58 +0000 UTCJudging by your reaction to the Mutant Enemy logo at the end of the credits, I'm guessing you don't ordinarily watch that far? That's cool but just letting you know that throughout the show's run there have been variations on the logo after certain special episodes, just in case you're interested. I'll list those episodes now so you know when to watch till after the credits, but if you want to be surprised/don't want to be spoiled on which eps are 'special' then please stop reading now: season 2 episode 22, season 3 episodes 10 and 22, season 6 episode 7, season 7 episodes 16 and episode 22.

2019-02-20 16:42:30 +0000 UTCMislabeled perhaps? Great reaction. By the way they get a new score guy in season 2, and the sound is so well done from that point on, MUCH better than even this episode - I think you'll really appreciate it. Just something else to look forward to about season 2.

2019-02-20 16:33:01 +0000 UTCI enjoyed that twist because to me Buffy is one part supernatural show, one part character development, and one part creating and twisting tropes.

2019-02-20 16:25:38 +0000 UTCI actually love that they took the dummy trope and twisted it on its head - where the creepy, demon dummy - is actually a good guy. I liked that lol. Also, i noticed you have mentioned a few times about buffy's strength. It's been shown and mentioned sporadically, but when a girl is called as the slayer, yes, she gains supernatural strength, speed, healing abilities etc. She needs that to be able to keep up or take down the demons and monsters and stuff. She is also able to sense vampires - if you remember in one of the early episodes where Giles finds her in the Bronze and tells her to sense if any vamps are around, and she picks one out of the crowd and ends up having to save Willow. So, yeah... Slayer is special :) and only one in the world.

2019-02-20 16:15:12 +0000 UTCSunnydale is like Rosewood in PLL no matter how many crazy and/or dangerous things happen the school is never shut down.

2019-02-20 15:41:42 +0000 UTCI like how this episode subverts the whole "creepy puppet" trope by having it actually be a demon hunter's spirit possessing the puppet and the actual villain is a demon.

2019-02-20 15:30:23 +0000 UTCyour title says episode 5, instead of 9... and I got really confused for a second lol

2019-02-20 15:11:10 +0000 UTCIf you skip to the 20min mark of your reaction to ep 1, Buffy's slayer strength is explained by Giles when he says: "Because you are the Slayer. Into each generation a slayer is born: one girl in all the world, a chosen one. One born with the strength and skill to hunt the vampires."

2019-02-20 15:01:32 +0000 UTCYeah, the strength is part of being a slayer.
