Sigrife and Irida portraits in low light

After shooting this set, I began to appreciate my EF50mm f1.4 lens more and more, can you see why?

You might be able to if you check the two screenshots at the end that contain camera and lens info, as well as camera settings.

First of all, it’s clear to me now when there’s more than one model, the 50mm lens outperforms the 85mm lens in terms of a wider depth of field with the same aperture, so that both models can be in focus, even with a low aperture like f4.0.

Granted the Canon EF85mm lens is a great portrait lens and separates the model from its surroundings very nicely, when a low aperture (eg f2.8) is used (e.g. the last photo in this set).

However, if you have two models, it’s really not possible to have them both in focus with a low aperture, so unless you’re attempting a cinematic style capture the 50mm lens makes more sense.

Equally importantly, it now seems to me that the 50mm provides better image quality, with more sharpness and fine detail, visible when you blow up the image.

Last but not least, as it’s a lighter lens, low shutter speeds are less likely to result in camera shake.

So, in all it’s better suited for low light conditions than my 85mm lens and I’ll be using it more often in the future, even when I’m shooting one model.

What do you think of the results anyways?

Ps: you can see much more of Sigrife and Irida, including art nude sets, behind the paywall.
