GOT Watch Along - S1E1 - Winter Is Coming

Comments

YAS STEF YAS! My favorite series. Plenty of ups and downs. Dont get too stressed about remembering names and situations. It'll become more and more clear as you watch. The first episode there is a lot to take in. The above comments do a great job explaining things without revealing spoilers. This will be my 8th rewatch!

I heard similar things. I feel the same way about it as well. It honestly makes my stomach churn more than the goriness of it all but at least knowing I'm not the only one and there are people who also are starting a-new with it, makes me feel a little better and comforted when I do watch it

I never could get into this series. I'm trying again because you're seeing it for the first time. I didn't like all the hyper-sexualization but I did hear that after a few episodes it dies down. Maybe I can get through this first season if you are able to bear it.

ITMacPro

Yeah the first season is a little harder. I remember not piecing things together as quickly with this show because there are so many characters and family names and locations but you will catch on. I think you did really good for a first time watcher picking up the details.

Some things you might have missed: The guy you saw beheaded was a member of the Night's Watch that were attacked by the White Walkers at the beginning of the show. The penalty for deserting the Night's Watch is death. The Night's Watch are a brotherhood of men who swore an oath to keep watch at the Wall. The Wall is located north of Winterfell. Jon Arryn, the guy who died suddenly, was the Hand of the King. King Robert Baratheon arrived at Winterfell to ask Ned Stark to be the next Hand of the King. The Hand of the King is the only other person who can make decisions in the king's name. The King and Ned Stark have been friends for quite a while. The King wanted to marry Ned Stark's sister, but obviously died. Daenerys is forced into marriage by her idiot brother in exchange for an army that would hopefully help him reclaim the Iron Throne. It's an awesome show. I hope you keep watching.

If I remember it took about 3 or 4 episodes for me to decide if I wanted to continue watching the show. The first episode is basically just an introduction to the main characters and the different locations. It is a bit of a slow burner to begin with but once the storylines progress and you learn more about the characters it'll become less confusing.

Hey, Stef! You've seen Lord of the Rings, that is where you know Ned Stark from. Sean Bean also played Borimir, a member of the Fellowship. He tried to take the ring from Frodo and later died, taking multiple arrows from the orcs, defending Merry and Pippen.

Tarlkov

This episode is an introduction to many of the main characters. It establishes who they are in relation to each other (no pun intended) and the hierarchy of where they stand in this kingdom. As they flesh out (again, no pun intended) more of the characters' backgrounds and personalities it becomes easier to enjoy the episodes. There IS a nudity and violence and this series makes no attempt to sugar-coat the stories of ambition, treachery, lust, greed, and even loyalty for primetime broadcast TV but the payoff is worth it, IMO. You will have to judge for yourself whether it's a show you want to continue watching and reacting to.

ButtercupsTrueLove

pretty good summary, cheers.

The first episode is the most confusing, they cram alot of info and lore into it. Trust me it will get easier!

To alleviate some naming confusion: - Wildlings are humans who live north of The Wall. - White Walkers are what you briefly saw attacking the Rangers - Wights also appeared but I don't want to spoil - The Night's Watch guard the wall, and are separate from the Houses. Overall, it's a very dark show with very gritty themes, and it is difficult for many to watch. If you push through, it may surprise you, especially the world building and character journeys. The Lore can also get confusing but what we learned this episode was: - Ned Stark helped Robert overthrow the Targaryens years ago. - Robert wanted to marry Ned's sister but she died, so Cersei was next in line. - Ned has 5 children with Cat (Robb, Sansa, Arya, Bran, Rickon), Jon Snow is a bastard so he can't have the Stark name (Bastards in the north are named Snow) - Theon, who hung around with the boys, is a ward, not related. - The remaining Targaryens have been in hiding across the sea, and Viserys is trying to build an army to come back and take his family throne.

Winter is coming. This will be a great reaction as always

And so it begins I really hope you stick with it because it really is one of the best shows to grace our screens in the last few decades. And yes emotions will happen but that is because it is so good. In fact it is so good that ... people usually relate other shows to this rather than the other way around. As for the spicy parts, yes this show has a fair bit of it but then it needs to be part of this world which is a pretty harsh world. You are going to have a fair bit of remembering to do because there is not much in any of the episodes that one could consider irrelevant or superfluous.
