Patreon Movie Picks!

Hello Everyone! Havits Here.

I've gone through this recent patreon post along with old ones that have new comments. So many suggestions, but I tried to pick names that i've seen through all the patreon posts.

HONOR SYSTEM. PLEASE VOTE FOR YOUR TOP 3 MOVIES YOU WANNA SEE.

Just a heads up. I've talked to Stef and she's seen the Jurassic Park Films ( damn it, I know! )

I've seen a lot of suggestions for end of watch, and gran torino. Great movies, unfortunately, i don't think they are the best suggestions bc of certain scenes involving assault on females characters. I think we know the scenes without going into details. For future reference Stef has told me she'd like to avoid things like this as much as possible.

Top 3 Films will make it to the next Patreon Pick Films.

Dog (2022) great film

Troy

Dog (2022) fantastic movie

Troy

Another movie which is very good and quite a faithful telling of events is a movie called Only the Brave (2017), about the effort to put out the Yarnell Wildfire in Arizona in 2013. I thought that that one was a really good movie, as well. It is hard and heartbreaking though, for sure.

With Dune being disqualified, the voters definitely seem to have a preference for The Last Samurai. I think that she is (probably) going to like it if she watches it. Or, if she plans on taking up all three, the three which appear to have then been selected would be The Last Samurai, Catch Me If You Can and Ex Machina. That would make for a good and interesting three and would give her plenty to react to for a little bit. Or, the other six aside from Dune would give her plenty for probably the next month, or so……………. It is just really cool that good recommendations are being offered on here!

Nathan Towne

Just checked in. Really cool to see that Ex Machina may make it. Would be great for a reaction because it provides a lot to talk about (and to think about). Would be really interesting to see her take throughout the movie.

Game of Thrones is similar, stylistically, in terms of tone and how it is made, to Gladiator, in some ways, but I didn’t think that the villains had quite as much depth of character as Commodus and it contains more overt, rather than implied/threatened sexual violence. Context and the way something is shown is always important, as well.🤷‍♂️ Some great characters in it though still. From what I have seen, I thought that Natalie Dormer’s character was very good, for instance. It should also be remembered that Gladiator is also beautiful and poignant. Very emotionally powerful. I haven’t seen enough Game of Thrones to know whether it has much of that, or not. But, it has something of a similar style in terms of some of how it is made, while also having a fantasy element, of course. As far as sexual violence is concerned, I would also say that there is substantially more sexual violence in Game of Thrones than in Gran Torino, for instance. For shows, she would probably like Firefly (and the movie Serenity which followed). She wouldn’t have to watch like nine seasons, either and it is such a classic.

Nathan Towne

I know that it didn’t make the list, but what would you say regarding Schindler’s List that way? It obviously wouldn’t be easy, but it very accurately and faithfully portrays historical events. I don’t doubt that it would be upsetting for her, though (it is for most of us). It is an important and incredibly great film though. Everything relating to The Holocaust is difficult, of course.

Nathan Towne

I agree and just because the show is highly requested doesn’t mean you should watch it. The show is very explicit and contains a lot of frankly disgusting things. You shouldn’t compromise your own morals to satisfy others, especially if it makes you uncomfortable. Don’t be afraid to say no to the show. That’s my opinion.

Sam

She will like The Last Samurai, I think. Too bad that all three of my picks are lagging so far behind, but that is alright. I like both The Last Samurai and Catch Me If You Can, as well. They are both good.

Nathan Towne

I’m glad to see The Last Sumurai on this list, one of my favourite films. I think Stef will enjoy it 😀

Sam

Dances with Wolves didn’t make the cut here, I can see. Nor did Schindler’s List. Both are really good and both won Best Picture for their years (1990 and 1993, respectively). Schindler’s List is just one of the greatest films ever made! Parasite also won Best Picture (2019), ofc and is a movie in which Stef will have to make up her mind on. It definitely has qualities. She would have to decide what she thinks about it. I am not sure how exactly it is wanted for us to vote. I merely voted for my three favorite films on this list, which are: -Master and Commander -Pan’s Labyrinth -Ex Machina Those are the three here which I personally like the best. All three are pretty brilliant movies. Btw, which Dune is this? The 1984 one, or the new one? If it is the original Dune, then I have seen all of the movies here. If it is the new one, then I have seen the other six movies, but haven’t seen the new Dune. As for the poll, it is interesting. I am getting the feeling that many of the voters may never have seen Pan’s Labyrinth, for instance. Master and Commander is then one of my personal favorite movies. I mentioned previously that the TV series Hornblower was quite good, as well. As far as the results above go, I think that she will definitely probably like The Last Samurai if it is one of the three chosen. Others, which didn’t make it here but have received multiple recommendations in previous threads, like Lion, Blood Diamond, The Last of the Mohicans and Apocalypto are all movies which are worth seeing, as well.

Nathan Towne

No worries. My bad. Didn’t mean to spoil anything. Was merely trying to convey the point that while I have only seen several episodes of Game of Thrones, it contains some quite explicit content. I will leave it at that.

Nathan Towne

All good, sorry, it's just because i've seen a few people suggest gladiator in the last post, so I didn't know if you were one of the ones that hadn't seen it.

Stef Solari

@Nathan Towne - Gave your comment a 'like' only because I agree with you. I've watched the entire series but the one example I cited was a different one and far from subtle. I don't even want to describe it.

ButtercupsTrueLove

sorry @nathan towne, I had to delete your comment because it contains spoilers. I have warned Stef about the violence and what she can expect. However, she wants to try it because it is something that has come highly suggested and she's intrigued to check it out.

Stef Solari

Yeah, I know that she has seen Gladiator. That is why I mentioned it that way. She posted a great reaction, I thought. I hear you. Appreciate the feedback.

Nathan Towne

Havits: I've talked to Stef about the few scenes in question. I've also told her I'll give her a heads up on the scenes in particular. She feels she should be able to handle it. Which is why she'll be watching at least the first 3-4 episodes to see if she's invested enough in the journey to keep going.

Stef Solari

Havits: She's seen Gladiator, the reaction is on here. She was able to do that, it's just End of Watch and Grand Torino have some pretty rough visuals of the actual thing that happen. So that is a bit much. If it's suggested and goes by quickly, it might be okay. it'll be a case by case basis.

Stef Solari

Stef should avoid watching "Game of Thrones". At least one season contains a scene of violent sexual assault. It's tough to watch. EDIT: I'll mention "The Last Duel" directed by Ridley Scott now, in case it comes up in a poll someday and I don't see it. It contains a violent sexual assault that figures heavily in the story of revenge and honor.

ButtercupsTrueLove

Does the context of the attacks on female characters matter? Gladiator contains clear suggestions of threatened rape against Lucilla (Commodus’ sister), for instance, from Commodus.

Nathan Towne

Havits: Everyone Pick 3 Movies only please.
